It was this amazing group of highly passionate, artistic, and technical people that, while we’d clash on occasion, could produce some really great products. I certainly miss them. But I take all that learning forward and try to project that spirit of Westwood into everything I do now.” It has now been 20 years since Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun officially released in the United States. While Westwood Studios is no more, its legacy lives on through the hundreds of developers and creators that called the studio their home decades ago. Many continue to make their mark on the industry from inside Microsoft, EA, and other studios. Petroglyph Games, which is composed of many former Westwood employees, is currently hard at work remastering Command & Conquer, Red Alert, and all of the series’s expansions for modern PC systems. Tiberian Sun and the rest of Westwood’s incredible portfolio of award-winning games really do stay with me to this day. Its campy FMV scenes and totally rad soundtrack delighted me as a player, and it’s an experience I’ll honestly never forget. Isgreen won’t either. “My fondest memories of Westwood will always be the people ⁠— the smiles and shouts and laughs and love that everyone who worked there shared with each other. I came to Westwood as a green, arrogant designer who hadn’t had a lot of people challenging me to do better. Personally, Westwood made me do that in spades. I grew. And I think that’s the best compliment I can give to the place and the people that pushed me. I came out of it a much better person and a better designer. And I take that spirit forward now with everyone I work with. While Westwood may not be around any longer, its spirit is propagated in all the people that worked there. Personally, I prefer science fiction over fantasy nine times out of ten, even though most of the MMOs that grace my desktop are fantasy games. Sci-fi has had an awfully difficult time making headway into the field of MMOs, with plenty of underperforming or canceled titles littering the way. I’ve heard it explained that the fantasy genre is easier for the common person to grasp because it uses elements of our past — primarily the medieval period — to provide a familiar baseline, whereas sci-fi’s futuristic setting requires world-building from scratch.Whatever the case may be, Earth & Beyond never really caught on the way that EVE Online did just a couple of years later, and its miniscule population was not enough for Electronic Arts to keep it running. But between 2002 and 2004, Earth & Beyond reached for the stars and gave its own spin on how a space-faring MMO could work. Let’s take a look today at what made Earth & Beyond unique, what it gave the industry, and how it may help upcoming space MMOs avoid a similar fate.Westwood’s final hurrahBack in the day, my friends and I were all nuts about Westwood Studios — the company that helped put real-time strategy games on the map with Dune II and Command & Conquer. I can’t tell you how many hours we sunk into C&C during college, but it was an obscene amount at the very least. But whereas Westwood’s RTS contemporary Blizzard would go on to create the smash MMO hit of 2004, Westwood’s own MMO project would be the studio’s swan song.Electronic Arts purchased the promising studio in 1998, and while fans had hoped that the larger company would enable the Westwood team to go on to bigger and better things, EA’s acquisition was the death knell for the studio. Titles were rushed out before they were ready, and EA aggressively downsized Westwood before closing it entirely in 2003 and moving part of the team to San Francisco to continue the project.It’s important to know this bit of history, because by the time that Earth & Beyond came out in 2002, Westwood already had one foot out the door and was hardly in a position to provide the ongoing development and support that an MMO required.Going back a bit, Westwood’s involvement with E&B began around 1998. Over the past two decades, Electronic Arts has developed a reputation for buying and "killing" independent video game studios.Suggested ReadingFair or not, there have been some high-profile EA acquisitions that never quite worked out. Game studios purchased and later shut down by the massive publisher include Westwood, the company behind the Command & Conquer strategy games, and Origin, best known for Ultima and Wing Commander.Suggested ReadingLive Forever in the Universe of 'New World: Aeternum'And then there's Bullfrog, the British studio responsible for classic games like Populous and Theme Park. EA bought Bullfrog in 1995, and just a couple of years later, studio co-founder and game designer Peter Molyneux left the company. By 2001, Bullfrog was effectively dead."The company fell into this sort of limbo period," ex-Bullfrog employee (and Syndicate creator) Sean Cooper told me. "Looking back on it right now, it was such a horrible time, I think for everyone, because people were leaving... If we could wind back time, I'd probably force Peter to not sell."So what happened? It's tempting to characterize EA as a big bad villain that gobbles up studios just to ruin them, but reality is far less simple. EA bought Bullfrog in hopes of continuing to make successful, lucrative games, not because they wanted to shut the studio down.While profiling Molyneux for a larger story, I asked about those days, and he offered up a couple of interesting explanations for Bullfrog's demise. As someone who has swung back and forth between indie studios and massive corporations more than a few times, Molyneux is certainly in a position to weigh in on this stuff. And his perspective is fascinating."EA is not an evil empire," Molyneux said. "They're a company that have done a great deal for this industry. [But] when corporates buy companies, several things change."There's the obvious. "You've got this problem where the founders of the company get a lot of money—that changes those people," Molyneux said. "That changes the company there."And then there's the not-so-obvious. "You've got the problem of what I call 'love abuse,'" Molyneux said. "When EA bought Bullfrog, they just wanted to make it nicer. They moved us to a nice office, where we couldn't shoot each other [with BB guns] in the corridors. We had an HR department because that was a nice proper professional thing to do. And that changes the flavor of the company."It's fascinating, as an outside observer, to think about how many little factors could have a major effect on how a company designs and produces games. But maybe that's what happened to Bullfrog, and Westwood, and Origin, and all those other small studios that have been gobbled up by publishers over the years. Maybe culture shock hurts more than we might imagine."When any company is acquired, it's gonna change the company," Molyneux said. "Sometimes, that change can possibly make the company better.
