The best time to visit Barbados guarantees long sunny afternoons on idyllic beaches and leisurely strolls around the UNESCO Heritage Site capital, Bridgetown. When visiting this dazzling island in the Caribbean, you’re going to get a dose of toes-in-the-sand bliss, to dive into crystal-blue waters, to pop on a snorkel and explore a technicolor world in the ocean—in other words, for a tropical escape. So wouldn’t it be so disappointing to get all the way there only to find you timed your trip incorrectly?To figure out the best time to visit Barbados, I spoke to one of Condé Nast Traveler’s Top Travel Specialists: Tim Roney of Lacure Luxury Villas, which pairs travelers with private villa rentals throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and elsewhere—and manages over 80 villas in Barbados alone. These five months are considered the dry season on the island, Roney says: “That's when you get plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures, and calm seas, which means this time is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving too—the best visibility comes with the clearest waters of the year.” To get specific, temperatures range between 75°F and 89°F (24°C and 31°C), and chances of clear, sunny days are very high.As such, this makes the island an ideal destination for those celebrating the Christmas and New Year’s holidays—making the best time to visit Barbados also peak season in Barbados, says Roney. Be mindful that prices for flights and the best hotels in Barbados may be higher than usual to correspond with tourist demand.All that said and done, Barbados is increasingly becoming a prime year round destination, according to Roney, especially because there are festivals and events throughout the cultural calendar of Barbados: “Known as the sweetest summer festival in the Caribbean, the Crop Over Festival in August creates a vibrant spectacle of music, dance, outdoor events, and street masquerades. In recent years, notable storms have hit the Caribbean island throughout July and August. However, September and October are statistically the most common months for such storms.More generally, the wet season in Barbados runs from July to November. The average rainfall in July is 8.5 inches, making it the wettest month; in comparison, the average rainfall in February is just 1.6 inches, making it the driest month, followed by March. However, sunny days are common during the wet season, when downpours and storms are short-lived.When visiting Barbados for the first time, how long should I stay and where should I go?For your first time in Barbados, plan to stay at least five nights, Roney says. There’s plenty to do: Hit the island’s superb golf courses and its amazing restaurants—all of which are very popular, so you ‘’d better make a habit of getting your reservations and tee-times early. Beyond that, there are the beaches, of course: “One of the prime attractions of Barbados are the excellent white sand beaches on the island’s western coast, often referred to as the Platinum Coast,” Roney says. “The waters are calm, and so the snorkeling and scuba diving are excellent.”If you’re in Barbados for surfing, get the best waves on the southern and eastern coasts from November through June. Also in the south, Roney says, “Carlisle Bay is the most popular beach, and it offers paddle boarding, kayaking, and kite surfing. And it’s home to a designated marine park that features six shipwrecks at depths ranging from 3 to 17 meters, making it another of the most popular spots for snorkeling and scuba diving in the Caribbean.”As for other activities, Roney suggests visiting Harrison’s Cave and Cole’s Cave. The former is a stunning underground limestone cavern filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal-clear pools; while the latter is for more daring adventurists, ready to spekunk through natural cave spaces and swim underground. Check out the Globe Drive-In, one of the last two remaining in the Caribbean, and the Barbados Turf Club, which organizes sporting events throughout the year at the historic Garrison Savannah racetrack.“And a visit to Barbados wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the lively Oistins Fish Fry on a Friday or Saturday night,” Roney
