In situations that can benefitfrom these current, and future, cutting-edge capabilities.Bottom line: Image acquisition speed, advanced acquisitiontechnologies and excellent image quality are the hallmarks of DRsystems.Disadvantages for cassette-based PSP (CR) detectorsThe delay between exposure and readout with labor-intensivehandling is a major disadvantage of cassette-based PSP detectors,particularly in situations that require the technologist to be awayfrom the patient. Readout and processing time of imaging plates canbe long, and for single plate readers, overexposures can take along time to "erase" the residual signals before another imagingplate can be inserted. PSP detectors are always "on," meaning thatthey are prone to background radiation and scattered radiation ifimproperly stored next to, or in, a radiographic room. It is veryimportant to implement an erasure of imaging plates that have notbeen used frequently, particularly after a long weekend as aprecaution to eliminate any potential contrast degrading backgroundradiation signals on patient images. Multiple PSP detectors, whilea nice "redundancy" feature, can also be a chore in terms ofinventory, cleaning, quality control testing and generalmaintenance.Disadvantages for active, integrated DR detectorsPositioning flexibility (e.g., cross-table lateral acquisitions,exotic views) is often difficult or impossible to achieve with manyDR systems (although newer integrated designs and portable DRdetectors are overcoming some of the early system designlimitations). Initial capital costs are extremely high (on theorder of 3 to 5 times the cost of a high-quality CR reader andimaging plates), making the case for return on investment crucialif the workload can't justify the throughput advantages. Redundancyconcerns and the cost of detector replacement are serious issues,and any down time in a busy, high-throughput room can bedetrimental to operating costs and timely delivery of patientcare.Best of both: Combining cassette-based CR and integrated DRIn most major hospitals, there will always be the need forflexibility and for efficient throughput for radiography, and withthe current status of both technologies, they nicely coexist.Integration of CR and DR in a single room with similar imageprocessing and concatenation of studies under a single accessionnumber is an attribute that allows for maximum productivity underone acquisition console, which has been successfully implemented inan outpatient clinic in the UC Davis Health System. In low-volumesituations that do not require high throughput for radiographyexaminations, the implementation of cassette-based CR has been thechoice for replacement of screen-film technology. However, withadvancements and lower costs likely, the potential of using arobust, low-cost portable DR detector in lieu of CR is verypossible in the coming years.Replacement strategies for historically cassette-based CRsystems at the UC Davis Health System are focused on implementationof AMFPIindirect detectors in targeted service areas, side by sidewith radiographic rooms that continue to use cassette-based CR.This has proven to be an effective way of providing the best ofboth technologies by taking advantage of the benefits of each.While the investment in CR technology
