Special Olympic Events - Farmington, NM
U. SAUCON TWP., Pa. - At DeSales University there was a lot of screaming and shivering going on during the Special Olympics Polar Plunge."We're freezin' for a reason," said Plunge organizer and DeSales junior Braden DeGrazia. That reason focuses on the special Olympians. Each dunk in a 10,000-gallon tank gets them closer to competition. DeGrazia says so far $25,000 has been raised by the DeSales Plunge."The athletes don't have to pay for anything, we take care of pretty much their travel, their equipment their uniforms, I mean, they are non-stop," said Special Olympics coach Matt Reardon.Non-stop is right. Ask them what events they compete in, and you will get a very long list, from soccer to basketball, softball to bowling.Brandon Krekeler has been competing in Special Olympics for more than 35 years. He shared the best part about competing: "You get to meet new people every day, a new event every year," said Krekeler. But this year there were a few firsts."We're particularly excited that our very first Bear Force One event is at DeSales University because for more than a decade they have hosted our Eastern Fall Sectional," said Julie Benjamin, Executive Director for Special Olympics in the Lehigh Valley and Poconos. It was also the first plunge for Krekelar and DeGrazia. And judging from the smiles of the plungers, they'll be back for more.. Agency Manager at Special Olympics NM Experience: Special Olympics NM Location: Albuquerque 1 connection on LinkedIn.
