Sci-Fi Movies Coming Soon

Fiction sub-genre of alternate history? Well, yes, it does. Yet, many would debate the opposite. To avoid too many minor squabbles, we stuck to stories that were unmistakably sci fi.That’s it. Otherwise, we kept it pretty straightforward. Just good old fashioned prejudice and personal preference. We’re sure you’ll disagree, but that’s what the comments section is for. Let us know what we got wrong, what we missed, and maybe… just maybe… what you agree with us on.Now that all of the preamble is out of the way, here we go. Let’s take a look at what the future holds for science fiction in 2020.Upcoming Sci Fi: MoviesScience Fiction movies seem to have practically taken over the movies. If it’s a blockbuster, it’s nine times out of ten going to be one of the many upcoming sci fi movies. Is this good? Well, we think so, but we love science fiction. But then again, we also love quiet little dramas and indie comedies and all the other great movies out there. Are they being swallowed up by these sci fi movies, new ones coming out in greater numbers each year?Yes. Partly. Yet, again, we’re kind of along for the ride. Besides, Safety Not Guaranteed by Colin Trevorrow is an example of an indie comedy that also happened to be a sci-fi movie. Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, was a quiet little drama set in a sci-fi world. These are good films and also good sci-fi movies.Maybe we can have our space cake and eat it too. Regardless, we’re definitely not going to turn our nose at these new sci fi movies. Because when we look out over 2020’s slate of new movies, sci fi rises to the top. It may just be our nerd brains sorting through the normies. But the upcoming sci-fi movies are only getting better and they stand out. Out of all upcoming movies, sci fi pops out from the lineup. And boy are there are some great sci-fi movies upcoming in 2020. We’ve selected some of the ones we’re especially excited for in this coming year, so let’s dive right in.The DivisionDetailsDirector: David LeitchWriter: Rafe Judkins (screenplay)Starring: Jessica Chastain, Jake GyllenhaalProduction Company: UbisoftDistributor: NetflixRelease Date: TBDSynopsis: “On Black Friday In New York City, Bio-Terrorists release a modified strain of Smallpox called the ‘Green Poison’ onto several amounts of currency bills. “This results in the disease spreading rapidly and before long society in NYC has collapsed – resulting in the activation of the Strategic Homeland Division. Sign in to your ScreenRant account Custom Image by Debanjana Chowdhury Summary Cameron's Avatar films offer a positive and beautiful future, a stark contrast to the bleak dystopian settings of most sci-fi movies. The success of Avatar highlights audiences' desire for escapism from reality and a yearning for optimism and connection in storytelling. Despite Avatar's popularity, Hollywood has yet to follow suit in creating more positive sci-fi narratives, opting instead for dystopian themes. James Cameron's Avatar films have proven to be undeniable hits, but it seems Hollywood has yet to catch on to the secret of their success. In a recent interview, Cameron disclosed his thoughts on why his films have proven to be so popular. What's surprising is that no one else seems to be copying him. With a combined box office total of $5.2 billion (via Box Office Mojo), the Avatar movies are fast becoming Disney's most important franchise. The first two installments currently hold the top and third place positions in a list of the highest-grossing movies of all time. Furthermore, with five more Avatar films currently in the works, the series certainly isn't going anywhere any time soon. According to Cameron, one thing about the films sets them apart from other sci-fi movies, and it has something to do with how Avatar depicts the future. Title Domestic International Worldwide Avatar $785 million $2.1 billion $2.9 billion Avatar: The Way of Water $684 million $1.6 billion $2.3 billion Related James Cameron's Avatar Future Is Following The Wrong Sci-Fi Franchises Director James Cameron has spoken openly about the future of the Avatar franchise, however, he may be taking inspiration from the wrong franchises. Apple finally announced its long-awaited virtual reality (VR) headset in June, the Apple Vision Pro. As everyone is discussing Apple's latest device and what the future of VR might hold, we've decided there's no better time to explore the best movies and TV shows about virtual reality. The best sci-fi movies and best sci-fi TV shows present us with great opportunities to explore our hopes, dreams and anxieties about the future – especially where our relationship with technology is headed.Although there may not be as many sci-fi movies about VR as there are about space exploration or robots, there's a growing selection of stories that explore the personal and broader societal impact of being able to strap on a headset – or plug your body directly into a central mainframe – and be transported into a fantastical, virtual world.Unfortunately, like most of the sci-fi genre, the best movies and TV shows about VR tend to err on the side of dystopia. But it's not all bad news. Which is why you'll find a mixture of stories in our list below. Some set in horrifying futures in which VR is humanity's only respite, others in which VR is to blame for the world's ills and several in which VR is a positive (for the most part) technological advance. With that in mind, here's our pick of the best movies and TV shows about virtual reality. Have we missed your favourite sci-fi masterpiece? Tell us in the box below. And be sure to upvote the ones you love. The best movies and TV shows about virtual realityNo movie explores the horrifying consequences of virtual reality quite as breathtakingly – and not to mention philosophically – as The Matrix. From the brilliant minds of the Wachowskis, The Matrix has become a cultural touchpoint since it first came out in 1999.It's set in a future dystopia where machines have realised just how terrible humanity is, so has hooked us all up to a virtual reality technology, called the Matrix, while they use us all for our energy. Grim? Yes. One of the best sci-fi movies of all time? Absolutely. Technically Total Recall deals with memory implantation, but maybe that's how virtual reality will work in the year 2084? Based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, Total Recall is about a man called Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger) who gets an implanted memory of an adventure on Mars. But he soon finds out that elements of what he thought were a fantastical memory are actually true. This is a fun and bonkers sci-fi movie from director Paul Verhoeven. Like a few other examples in this list, we like that this movie deals with the fallout when you mess with our minds. This kind of thinking can make people unnecessarily worried about real-life tech, but it's also a valid concern when you consider just how much time we spend on screens already. One of the few positive – or at least neutral – examples of VR in our list, the
