That leaves a wide-open field for the former Outback Bowl in Tampa, next in the pecking order of Big Ten bowl sites.The ReliaQuest Bowl would have the choice of taking 8-4 Iowa or choosing among a trio of 7-5 teams: Michigan, Minnesota or Rutgers. Factoring in fan travel and potential viewership numbers in cooperation with the game’s bowl TV partner, ESPN, the Wolverines are in a more favorable position over the Gophers and Scarlet Knights.That could effectively lave the ReliaQuest Bowl selection committee with a choice: Take 8-4 Iowa (who hasn’t played in the game since 2019) or 7-5 Michigan (who hasn’t played in the game since ‘18)? The Wolverines last played in a Florida bowl game in 2021, in the Orange Bowl as part of the team’s first trip to the College Football Playoff.If the ReliaQuest Bowl winds up choosing the Hawkeyes, Michigan would fall to the Music City Bowl in Nashville, an expectation among national writers who forecast bowl season.Updated projections from ESPN and CBS Sports have the Wolverines playing an SEC team in Nashville on Dec. 30, while Brett McMurphy of The Action Network has the Music City Bowl taking Minnesota over Michigan, dropping the Wolverines to the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 28 at Yankee Stadium in New York.Complicating matters here is what the playoff committee does with 11-1 Indiana. If the Hoosiers were somehow left out of the field, they would be the first choice for the Citrus Bowl and drop Illinois to the ReliaQuest Bowl.We’ll know more this week, after Tuesday’s penultimate CFP rankings and conference championship games are played.
