(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)APBy Aaron McMann | [email protected]’s stunning upset of Ohio State on Saturday has opened the door for a potential postseason return to Florida. The 7-5 Wolverines are now in play for the Dec. 31 ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, sources say, a selection that might irk some in Iowa City.Assuming the Big Ten gets four teams into the expanded College Football Playoff field this year, 9-3 Illinois would be the likely choice to land at the Citrus Bowl, the most prominent non-playoff, Big Ten-affiliated game on the bowl calendar. That leaves a wide-open field for the former Outback Bowl in Tampa, next in the pecking order of Big Ten bowl sites. The ReliaQuest Bowl would have the choice of taking 8-4 Iowa or choosing among a trio of 7-5 teams: Michigan, Minnesota or Rutgers. Factoring in fan travel and potential viewership numbers in cooperation with the game’s bowl TV partner, ESPN, the Wolverines are in a more favorable position over the Gophers and Scarlet Knights. That could effectively lave the ReliaQuest Bowl selection committee with a choice: Take 8-4 Iowa (who hasn’t played in the game since 2019) or 7-5 Michigan (who hasn’t played in the game since ‘18)? The Wolverines last played in a Florida bowl game in 2021, in the Orange Bowl as part of the team’s first trip to the College Football Playoff. If the ReliaQuest Bowl winds up choosing the Hawkeyes, Michigan would fall to the Music City Bowl in Nashville, an expectation among national writers who forecast bowl season.Updated projections from ESPN and CBS Sports have the Wolverines playing an SEC team in Nashville on Dec. 30, while Brett McMurphy of The Action Network has the Music City Bowl taking Minnesota over Michigan, dropping the Wolverines to the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 28 at Yankee Stadium in New York.Complicating matters here is what the playoff committee does with 11-1 Indiana. If the Hoosiers were somehow left out of the field, they would be the first choice for the Citrus Bowl and drop Illinois to the ReliaQuest Bowl. We’ll know more this week, after Tuesday’s penultimate CFP rankings and conference championship games are played. The playoff field will be unveiled next Sunday, then bowls begin to finalize their matchups. And while the Wolverines didn’t have a great season, they remain a big draw nationally for sites eager to sell tickets and draw eyeballs on their games.Michigan bowl projections:• ESPN — Music City Bowl vs. South Carolina (Kyle Bonagura), Ole Miss (Mark Schlabach)• CBS Sports — Music City Bowl vs. Missouri (Jerry Palm)• USA Today — Music City Bowl vs. LSU (Erick Smith)• The Action Network — Pinstripe Bowl vs. Boston College (Brett McMurphy)• Sporting News — Las Vegas Bowl vs. Colorado (Bill Bender)BETTING: Check out our guide to the best Michigan sportsbooks, where our team of sports betting experts has

“This keeps us in the playoff hunt. That’s right I said it, playoff hunt”, — Missouri Tigers Head Coach Eli Drinkwitz said on SEC Network postgame after the 30-23 win over Oklahoma. Maybe he isn’t wrong? Mizzou will need to win out and get tons of help, but the Tigers may have an outside shot at 10-2. A lot would need to happen, however. On3’s Ari Wasserman does have Missouri as one of the Next Four Out in his latest bubble watch. Something to keep an eye on. In the latest College Football Playoff rankings, Mizzou comes in at No. 23 in the country. There’s plenty of work left to do for Missouri to even get back into CFP consideration, and it all starts on Saturday at the No. 21 South Carolina Gamecocks. Other young players to stand out and make a name for themselves, but Alabama is not the ideal opponent for a debut.Additionally, this is a double revenge spot for Alabama. The Wolverines defeated the Tide in the CFP semifinal before knocking out their current head coach Kalen DeBoer and his Washington team in the National Championship game. If given the opportunity, expect Alabama to run up the score in this matchup. It also has dominated in previous non-CFP bowl games, defeating Michigan State, 49-7, in the 2011 Citrus Bowl, Michigan 35-16 in the 2020 Citrus Bowl and Kansas State 45-20 in the 2023 Sugar Bowl.Another 19-point victory would cover this spread, and I expect the Crimson Tide to win by at least two touchdowns.Pick: Alabama -13.5 (Play to -16.5) Alabama vs Michigan Start Time, TV Channel, Location, How to WatchLocation:Raymond James StadiumDate:Tuesday, Dec. 31Kickoff Time:12 p.m. ETTV / Streaming:ESPNAlabama takes on Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN. To kick off the New Year’s Eve bowl slate, the Alabama Crimson Tide (9-3, 5-3 SEC) will take on the Michigan Wolverines (7-5, 5-4 Big Ten) in the ReliaQuest Bowl. The game will start at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN.Finishing No. 11 in the final College Football Playoff rankings, Alabama was in line to make the CFP before Clemson defeated SMU, 34-31, in the ACC Championship game. That may cause some questions about its motivation for this bowl game. However, it also has the opportunity to get revenge for last season’s CFP semifinals. It has been quite the fall from grace for the Wolverines after winning the national title last season. However, they did end the season with a fourth consecutive victory over arch-rival Ohio State, 13-10.Michigan was a double-digit underdog against the Buckeyes and will be a double-digit ‘dog in this bowl game as well. Following a letdown first year at Tuscaloosa, Kalen DeBoer has been busy in the 2025 offseason. The 50-year-old head coach made another splash on Friday when Alabama received a commitment from four-star recruit Jamarion Matthews.Matthews, a defensive end from Gainesville, Georgia, is one of the top names for the class of 2026. While still one year away, he could not stop himself from voicing his enthusiasm about joining the Crimson Tide.“I don't give a p*** about nothing but the Tide,” Matthews said, via On3 Sports.Matthews committed to DeBoer and Alabama over offers from LSU, Clemson and Florida State, per Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports. He was also heavily recruited by Ole Miss, Penn State, Arkansas and others.Once the prioritized recruit lands in Tuscaloosa, he will help DeBoer address one of Alabama's biggest weaknesses. The Crimson Tide managed just 25 sacks as a team in 2024, the third-fewest in the SEC. No player recorded more than five on the year.In his first year with the team, DeBoer led the Tide to a 9-4 record in 2024. They briefly reached No. 1 in the AP poll after a big win over Georgia but repeatedly faded with letdown losses to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma. Alabama subsequently hired Ryan Grubb to fill the role, who worked in the same role with DeBoer at Washington and Fresno State.
