Marvel and Star Wars actor Ray Stevenson has died, his representatives have confirmed.The 58-year-old was filming in Italy when he was taken to hospital due to a sudden illness.Known for playing Asgardian warrior Volstagg in Thor and leading the pre-Disney/Marvel Punisher film, Stevenson will appear in upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka this August as villain Baylan Skoll.Though the series marks his live-action debut, he was no stranger to the intergalactic franchise, having voiced Mandalorian super commando Gar Saxon in the animated Clone Wars and Rebels.Following the news of his passing on Sunday 21st May, a tribute was posted on the official Star Wars website. "We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of our dear friend Ray Stevenson. Ray was an incredible combination of talent, warmth, humor, and heart," it read.It continued: "His ability to play a villain, while being such a kind and caring person in reality, is a testament to his incredible talent."Lucasfilm executive director and Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni also shared a tribute, adding: "We have lost a great talent and friend in Ray Stevenson. His kindness and generosity were felt by our entire team on Ahsoka."I always looked forward to working with Ray, and I appreciated his insight and daily wisdom. August 22, 2023 @ 5:41 PM“Star Wars: Ahsoka” paid tribute to late star Ray Stevenson, who died on May 21, in its series premiere on Tuesday.An end card before the credits in the first episode read: “For our friend Ray.” Stevenson completed filming on “Ahsoka” before his death at age 58. He plays an original character Baylan Skoll, a Force user who aligns himself with Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). Skoll is the master to Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno); in fact, the first episode is titled “Master and Apprentice.” Skoll is a formidable warrior who wields an orange lightsaber. In various trailers, he’s seen dispatching New Republic guards and dueling with Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) herself.During Star Wars Celebration back in April, Stevenson shared with TheWrap how excited he was to be joining the live action series and holding a lightsaber for the first time.“The first time was a costume camera test,” he recalled. “We’re all very nervous and standing in the costume. Somebody hands me the lightsaber, and then some guy turns it on. And, of course, you make the noise — ‘vvvrrrrmm vvvrrrrmm’ –because you can’t help it.” He continued: “And then the beauty of it is that when you do the training and you get on the set and your fighting with Ahsoka — and she’s got two and they’re flashing everywhere — and then you pinch yourself. And you go, ‘I’m actually doing this. If you’re gonna give me a lightsaber, I’m gonna use it.” Stevenson previously lent his voice talents as Gar Saxon in several episodes of “Star Wars: Rebels” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” He also appeared as Volstagg in two “Thor” movies and Governor Buxton in the critically acclaimed “RRR.” Back in May, Dawson paid tribute to her late costar. “Stunned and reeling from this tragic, devastating news. Gone too soon from this world,” the actress wrote on Instagram. “At a loss for words… Just wanted to mark this moment and share your ever ready and present smile. Love you forever. Ahsoka Sign in to your Collider account Image via HBO As Lucasfilm begins to gear up for the beginning of production on Ahsoka Season 2, there's been a surprising casting announcement, which will be noteworthy for both fans of Star Wars and HBO's Game of Thrones. Following the sudden, shocking and tragic death of Ray Stevenson in May 2023, Scottish actor Rory McCann, best known for his role as Sandor Clegane (aka The Hound) on Game of Thrones, has been cast to continue Stevenson’s legacy by stepping into the role of Baylan Skoll. The Hollywood Report confirmed the news, first reported by Jeff Sneider. McCann was a close friend of Stevenson, and Sneider reported that Stevenson's widow gave McCann her blessing to take on the role and pay tribute to Stevenson's memory in that way. Baylan Skoll is a complex, layered anti-hero, which should be perfect for McCann to take on given his history, particularly in Game of Thrones. The character was introduced in Ahsoka Season 1, and is a former Jedi who abandoned the Order after the fall of the Republic. He is now a mercenary for hire, wielding a red lightsaber, and is accompanied by his apprentice, Shin Hati (played by Ivanna Sakhno). Skoll’s mysterious motivations and considerable screen presence quickly made him a seriously popular character, and fans are eager to see how the story will develop in the upcoming season.
