Jamie Werner Zawinski (born November 3, 1968), commonly known as jwz, is an American computer programmer, blogger and impresario. He is best known for his role in the creation of Netscape Navigator, Netscape Mail, Lucid Emacs, Mozilla.org, and XScreenSaver. He is also the proprietor of DNA Lounge, a nightclub and live music venue in San Francisco.Jamie ZawinskiBornJames Werner ZawinskiNovember 3, 1968Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.Websitewww.jwz.org Biography Zawinski's programming career began at age 16 with Scott Fahlman's Spice Lisp project at Carnegie Mellon University. He then worked at AI startup Expert Technologies, Inc. followed by Robert Wilensky and Peter Norvig's AI research group at UC Berkeley, working on natural language processing. In 1990 he began working at Lucid Inc., first working on Lucid Common Lisp, and then on Lucid's Energize C++ IDE. Lucid decided to use GNU Emacs as the text editor for their IDE due to its free license, popularity, and extensibility, and Zawinski led that project. As Zawinski and the other programmers made fundamental changes to GNU Emacs to add new functionality, tensions over how to merge these patches into the main tree eventually led to the fork of the project into GNU Emacs and Lucid Emacs (now XEmacs).[1]In 1992 he released the first version of XScreenSaver, a free and open-source collection now containing more than 240[2]screensavers. Initially released for Unix, it now supports macOS, iOS and Android as well. On Unix systems, it also provides the framework for blanking and locking the screen. He still maintains it, with new releases coming out several times a year.[3] Netscape and Mozilla Following Lucid's bankruptcy in 1994, Zawinski was one of the initial employees of Mosaic Communications, later known as Netscape. At Netscape, he developed the Unix release of Netscape Navigator 1.0,[4][5]and later, Netscape Mail, the first mail reader (or Usenet reader) to natively support HTML.[6]Zawinski came up with the name "Mozilla" (originally the internal code-name of the web browser) during a staff meeting, as a reference to Godzilla and a portmanteau of "Mosaic killer".[7][8]An easter egg he coded in the Netscape browser became quite well known during the early days of the WorldNetscape System 2 Netscape - netscape-communications.com
Yes, the relationship is certainly convoluted. :) In short, Netscape decided that they would open-source the code to their "Netscape 5" product and allow the community to help develop their replacement for the Netscape 4.x Communicator suite. Mozilla was created as an entity and was financed and run by Netscape for many years. Due to a complete rewrite and long delays, Netscape 5 was never released. Mozilla eventually started releasing test versions of their new product which Netscape took and repackaged as Netscape 6. As the product was unfinished and very buggy, Netscape 6 was extremely unpopular. Eventually Mozilla released their Mozilla 1.0, which was repackaged as Netscape 7.0. However the momentum was behind the Mozilla version, Netscape faded away, control over development was handed to the Mozilla Foundation which in turn abandoned the "suite" product to concentrate on Firefox. Netscape is now owned by AOL and is little more than a shell. Netscape 8 is a repackaged Firefox with a different interface and a few extras. Browser share for Netscape is now virtually non-existent.. Then your Windows and Netscape 7 will have the latest Java 2 Standard Edition Runtime Environment. 2025-04-19I have both "Netscape 7.2" and "Internet Explorer 6 sp2"installed on a Dell Inspiron E1505 Notebook, running with an IntelDuo Processor and MS Windows XP Professional operating system. Ipreviously had Flash Player 8 installed and all was well with bothbrowsers. After upgrading to Flash Player 9 (Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox) version, not all web sites willplay a video using Netscape 7.2, but does play using InternetExplorer 6. When visiting the TMZ web site at URL below: Netscape 7.2 browser shows a blank white background inthe windowed area where the video is supposed to play, with arotating cubed object and the text "Loading Player". However, thevideo content never appears. I have performed a vigorous uninstallof Flash Player 9, with the Adobe uninstaller and have even editedthe windows registry cleaning out any reference to Macromedia Flashor Shockwave players.I tried to go backwards and re-installed Flash Player 8 andthen tried version 7, but nothing changed. To no avail, I have beenunsucessful to achieve consistent operation of Flash Player (anyversion) for all web sites viewed with Netscape 7.2, as it oncewas. What ever the Flash Player 9 install or perhaps a MicrosoftWindows "security update" has changed, is now permanent .P.S.when visiting the Adobe test site: identifies Flash Player9,0,47,0 and ShockwavePlayer 10.2r21 are complete and installed successfully, withall animations working, for both Netscape 7.2 and Internet Explorer6 sp2.Please respond with a work around.
