The Last of Us' Cordyceps Cordyceps is a real genus of fungi infamous for its parasitic nature. While most species are only capable of infecting insects and other arthropods, The Last of Us introduced a mutated strain of the fungus, which grew inside of humans and took control over the hosts' bodies. Human hosts of the Cordyceps fungi grew increasingly aggressive as the infection progressed. Once the host fully succumbed to the Cordyceps' influence, they would attack any uninfected human on sight, further spreading the infection by biting their victims. While no such Cordyceps strain currently exists outside of The Last of Us, its real-world inspiration has caused anxiety among some of the franchise's followers.
