Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is everything you could want from a collectible TCG. It's got strategic gameplay, is complex yet easy to learn, and offers nearly endless deck-building and playstyle possibilities. It's got lore to back the cards up, RPG elements, collectability, and the best art of any TCG, bar none. Plus, you can play MTG in a multitude of unique formats, both online and in person.Today, I will teach you how to play Magic: The Gathering (MTG) from start to finish. I'll cover everything from how the game works and the basic rules to the parts of a turn and different card types. Even if you've never picked up a deck before today, by the end of this article, you'll know how to play MTG. So, without further ado, let's get started. How To Play Magic: The GatheringLet's start with a fundamental overview of MTG and how it works. Each player usually starts a game of magic with a 60-card deck consisting of spells (playable cards that affect the game) and lands, which are used to "pay" for your spells. Each player will draw seven cards, determine who goes first (via die roll, coin flip, etc.), and alternate turns from there.During a turn, a player draws one card and can play cards from their hand onto the board. Creature cards are used to attack opponents or block incoming attacks from opposing creatures. Non-creature spells can affect the game in various ways. By attacking each other or dealing damage with non-creature

Both Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic: The Gathering are long-running and well-loved trading card games, and their online game equivalents, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel and Magic: The Gathering Arena, will naturally draw comparisons. MTG Arena originally released in 2018, while Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel was a recent surprise release on January 19, 2022. The original card games, however, are much older, with Magic running since 1993. The Yu-Gi-Oh card game started off in Japan in 1999 and wouldn’t see a finalized international release until 2002, but the manga that the series originates from began in 1996. Like their tabletop counterparts, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel and the mobile-friendly MTG Arena allow players to collect the games’ cards and challenge others to battle with their decks. The online and tournament functionality has given fans ample opportunity to try out new cards in addition to returning to their old favorites. Both games offer a solid way to experience these beloved card games for players both new and experienced. Both games also use a free-to-play game model with optional microtransactions to get more cards. There is also a wildcard system in Magic: The Gathering Arena that allows players to craft cards of their choosing so long as they match the rarity of their wildcards. Similarly, players in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel use CP to craft cards. CP is earned through missions, the game’s Duel Pass feature, and from dismantling duplicate cards to make any card of that specific rarity. These basic features allow fans to add to their virtual card collections and enjoy their chosen card game with their favorite decks. But there are some ways in which Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel gives players even more options to approach the game compared to Magic: The Gathering Arena. YGO! Master Duel Is On More Platforms Than MTG Arena Magic: The Gathering Arena and Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel have a few shared platforms. Magic: The Gathering Arena is available on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, on the other hand, can be downloaded for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and Windows. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel supports cross-save, as does MTG Arena. Although MTG Arena can be played on Mac computers, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is still available on iOS and also playable on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles, making Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel a lot more accessible. YGO! Master Duel Has Dedicated Solo Mode (Which MTG Arena Needs) Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel has a rather intensive solo mode. In addition to teaching players the basics of the game, the solo mode includes stories that introduce the lore behind Yu-Gi-Oh’s different archetypes. After viewing the story, players can learn how to use the cards themselves in duels, and earn those very cards — and sometimes even entire structure decks — by completing the areas. It’s a fun way to learn not only the world-building behind the cards, but also how to use them practically. Completely unfit for the purpose laid out by its name. While this would be problematic enough for any traditional MTG set, it’s an even greater problem for Tales of Middle-earth. As a Universes Beyond crossover set, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth is tailored toward new MTG players. Due to this, it’s incredibly important that information about products is as clear as possible. Thankfully, most products, like the aptly named Draft and Collector, automatically do this. The Gift Bundle, however, is currently a complete misnomer, due to the price point. In theory, this could turn away plenty of prospective purchasers who would otherwise be interested. Unfortunately, since the Gift Bundle could contain The One Ring, not much can be done about the problematic pricing. After all, due to the chance being there, hopeful collectors are evidently going to snap up the stock they can. In theory, it is possible that prices could fall before the product’s release on July 7th. For this to happen, however, The One Ring would need to be found and posted online to quell the excitement. Due to the dismal odds of finding The One Ring, there’s no guarantee this is going to happen. What we do know for sure, however, is that The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Gift Bundle is selling like hotcakes. Due to this sales success, Wizards may consider the product a major win, even if it is theoretically detrimental for new players. Launching on November 25th, 2024, this new set is fully Standard legal and won’t rotate until “at least 2029.” For better or worse, MTG Foundations appears to mark a major shift in philosophy surrounding Standard and its metagame. As the name somewhat suggests, Magic: The Gathering Foundations is aimed at new players first and foremost. Offering a new entry point into MTG, Foundations aims to provide exciting new and reprinted cards to players new and old. To ensure the set is as accessible as possible, Wizards is even creating two new-player-focused products: The Beginner Box and Starter Kits. Unsurprisingly, following the release of MTG Foundations, the set has had a noticeable impact on multiple formats. Returning staples like Llanowar Elves have supercharged some decks, sharking up the competitive order. While Standard hasn’t been completely inverted, there’s nonetheless been a lot of exciting developments.Notably, unlike most sets, Magic: The Gathering Foundations does not have any preconstructed Commander decks. Thankfully, there is still something for Commander players to look forward to Foundations Jumpstart. While primarily geared towards new players, this set has plenty of exciting Commander-focused cards including awesome typal-supporting legendaries.Read More: MTG Foundations Spoilers Include New Blood Artist And Adorable Cats2025 and BeyondWren’s Run Packmaster | LorwynWhile 2024 has more than enough content to gawp at, MTG is far from finished. Heartfire Hero and Leyline of Resonance.[10] Wizards of the Coast recognized that the deck's speed and ability to end games as quickly as turn two was having a detrimental effect on the format.Previously banned cards[]Fable of the Mirror-Breaker // Reflection of Kiki-Jiki[11]Grinning Ignus is the only other card to have been banned in Alchemy.[12] It was half of a two-card combo with the original Alchemy: New Capenna printing of Racketeer Boss that could generate an infinite storm count, an infinite number of cast and enters the battlefield triggers for creatures and an infinite number of enters the battlfield triggers for artifacts.[13][14] Due to Grinning Ignus having a mana ability that returned it to its owners hand, the combo was extremely difficult to disrupt and subsequently warped the Alchemy format. Digital play design assessed rebalancing Grinning Ignus but found that any such rebalance would eliminate the combo in the same way as banning Grinning Ignus and thus banning was the correct option.[15] Racketeer Boss was subsequently rebalanced itself to remove the repeateable treasure creation.[16]Previously suspended cards[]Leyline of Resonance was suspended from October 22 to November 12, 2024 while the Arena team worked on a rebalance for the card.[17][10] It's ability to provide explosive starts allowed aggro decks to win the game on turn two before an opponent could interact.[18] It was un-suspended as A-Leyline of Resonance.Flavor text[] Alchemy card with flavor text Many Alchemy cards feature flavor text that is not visible on the cards themselves, but rather in a separate pop-up box.
