Megan Roup - The Sculpt Society

Over the course of the next few months, we’ll be catching up with Megan Roup, founder of the massively popular dance-workout class, Sculpt Society. We’ll join Roup, a new mom, as she adjusts to postpartum life. She’ll also tell us how she’s regaining core strength and strengthening her pelvic floor, and give us some quick-and-easy workouts she’s been developing for busy moms — just like herself.____Megan Roup first rose to fame as the body-positive fitness guru who founded The Sculpt Society, a dance-cardio workout program “for the non-dancer”; it offers classes that help build strength and endurance while having a good time. Each class is essentially an hour-long dance workout that incorporates weights, high-energy music, and very easy-to-follow steps. As the pandemic kept people out of gyms and Roup took Sculpt Society entirely online, the popularity of the workout (which requires very little equipment, and is thus easy to do from the comfort of your own home) skyrocketed, and Sculpt Society is now the most popular at-home dance-cardio workout platform. The pandemic brought another huge change to Roup’s life: she became pregnant, and in June she and her husband Morgan Humphrey welcomed their first child — a daughter named Harlow. Roup has always been radically honest with her fans and followers about her own fitness journey, and she’s been no different about motherhood. “There’s this idea that you get pregnant, and you get a pregnancy glow, and it’s all so wonderful. That was what I expected pregnancy to be,” says Roup.

The routine mixes low-impact sculpting exercises, dance cardio and yoga to achieve the supermodel’s goals while having fun. Hosk herself describes the routine as “energy giving, intense and joyful”.“In the video, we are starting with an arm sequence using 3lb hand weights,” explains Roup. “We then move to lower body sculpting using my sliders. In my standing sequences, I like to mix functional compound exercises like lunges and curtsy squats.”Roup, who also boasts Karlie Kloss, Shanina Shaik and Nadine Leopold as clientele, explains the workout can be done without equipment, just your body weight. But in the video, Hosk and Roup use 1.5 kg dumbbells, sliders and ankle weights.Watch Elsa Hosk's gym-based workout below:

At the time, Project was in its infancy, and people barely knew that it existed, let alone was a hub for elite trainers. Roup's class was simple, but fun: a dance cardio workout that incorporated strength-training moves done with sliding discs. Only two people showed up to the class, but she didn't mind."I believed strongly enough in what I could deliver in the class, I just knew I needed to spread the word," Roup recalls. She figured if she could just make sure those two people were "having the best fucking time of their life," then they would come back — and they did, with friends. "I didn't want it to just be a class, I wanted it to be bigger," she says. These days, Roup teaches sold-out classes weekly at Project, streams dance classes on a digital platform called Óbe, has 35K followers on Instagram, and sells branded home workout equipment. And starting this month, The Sculpt Society will be rolled out at Equinox locations in New York City.AdvertisementADVERTISEMENTRoup is the first trainer from Project to have her workout scaled for the wider Equinox audience. There are plans to do the same thing with other Project trainers, but Vimla Black Gupta, Equinox's chief marketing officer says "what's happened with The Sculpt Society has been truly remarkable."So, what makes The Sculpt Society so special? For starters, it is fun, in a Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons-knockoff kind of way. Before working in fitness, Roup was a professional dancer for the Brooklyn Nets, and she knew she wanted to use simple dance moves — like the grapevine, box step, and jumps — for the cardio portion of her class. "It was a selfish move, because it was everything I always wanted in a class," she says. The vibe and ethos of her class was just as important: "I wanted to just deliver a really solid, kickass workout that had really strong groups of

Just to see her? First of all, she loves regulars, and says there's an intimacy in sweating with people regularly. "I get to see them sometimes more than I see my family; a lot of them are my friends now," she says. As for the celebrity aspect, Roup is humble. "I take that as a compliment, because I've worked my butt off to get it there," she says. Most days, Roup teaches four classes, and works as a fit model. "I'm laser-focused. Discipline, man," she says. Now that The Sculpt Society is going mainstream, at Equinox at least, Roup's days might get a little easier. She recently got to hand-pick who will be teaching Sculpt Society classes, and says she's proud of the group they chose. Although she won't be able to teach every single class anymore, she tears up when talking about where things are headed. "I don’t mean it in a cheesy way, but seeing women come in and feel really good about themselves in their bodies is the best," she says. "Most women have gone through a struggle at some point in their life, so to see women come in and own the movement and own themselves is the most rewarding thing."AdvertisementADVERTISEMENT

Positive women, because that was really missing in a lot of boutique fitness spaces," she says. "I don't want to be yelled at. Who wants that?"The 50-minute class begins with follow-along dance cardio that's easy enough for non-dancers to pick up. After the warmup, you hold light weights and do a series of rhythmic arm exercises, kind of like in a SoulCycle class. Then comes the sliders: Placing your feet on The Sculpt Society sliders, you do lunges in all different directions, plus planks. From there, you get on all fours and perform several repetitions of glute exercises with ankle weights on (picture what Busy Phillipps does in her workout Instagram stories everyday), similar to what you'd do during a barre class. Finally, you end with another dance break.AdvertisementADVERTISEMENTI am a boutique fitness skeptic and former ballet dancer, but I was pleasantly surprised by the workout. I stan a dance cardio moment, and although using sliders is not exactly groundbreaking, it was a nice mix to the usual squats and lunges that you're made to do during a strength-training class. I like that there wasn't an emphasis on the number of repetitions we were doing, and instead we moved with the music. The leg and butt portion was rough, and I noticed lots of people in the class just kind of stopped in the middle of the exercises. But then again, the moves were way more interesting than squats, so time flew. After the class Roup warned me that I'd be "sore in new places." She was right. Overall, I liked the workout and the vibe, even though it wasn't that revolutionary. And I can totally see why people are so drawn to Roup: She's effervescent, and bounces around the studio like a bar mitzvah hype dancer.“Most women have gone through a struggle at some point in their life, so to see women come in and own the movement and own themselves is the most rewarding thing.Megan Roup”I asked Roup if it ever feels weird to be the face of a workout, or have people who come to her class. Ratings and Reviews 4.9 out of 5 2.9K Ratings The Workout App That Made Me Delete All My Other Workout Apps The Sculpt Society was just was I had been searching for. With COVID, learning how to work out at home was a challenge and with so many exercise app options, I was feeling overwhelmed with finding a new regimen that I liked. I tried The Pilates Class App, Melissa Wood Health, Sweat, Obé, etc. and they were all good but all missing something that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. And it all left me feeling pretty defeated. Megan & TSS brought exactly what I was missing. Light weight at-home workouts with energy & movement that are actually SUCH a challenge and get your heart pumping! It’s the best mix of dance cardio, light weights, Pilates-like movements + more packed into class-like combos that are tough but so incredibly good & always keep you moving. Megan pushes you, that’s for sure, but in the best way. (And she’s so sweet & positive - always making me feel strong & welcome). These workouts are so so good. And you are SORE the next day & feel amazing! All without having to use heavy weights or do any high-impact workouts. I’m starting with the 10 week program and it helps so much with helping you find a good starting point amongst all the (awesome) content on the app. I’m genuinely so glad I have this program to turn to and think it will actually change how I workout for the rest of my life. If you’re on the fence, TRY IT. I couldn’t love it any more. Thank you, Megan & TSS! Megan = The Rut Buster 💪💪 The annoying thing about working out is that the more you do it, the more fun it becomes. I have 7 different apps/subscriptions/classes that I love doing when I feel "in shape." But sticking to a routine isn't always easy for me, probably true for many of us. What about when days become weeks, and weeks become months, and you're feeling like you're starting at square 1? My inner critique is complaining, "yuck, look at you, how did you let yourself fall out of your routine? Getting it back is going to be SO hard. Why are you so weak?" Mean! This has happened to me a bunch of times over the past few years, whether it's triggered by a stressful period at work, having COVID (twice...), or just not having a trip to the beach to look forward to and motivate me. Enter TSS... Without fail, Megan is THE rut buster. With all
