Given Disney’s recent success with live-action films, this one is sure to be just as amazing.The Hunchback of Notre Dame has been recreated multiple times, most notably the popular 1996 animated Disney version, and the 1939 Charles Laughton version. The Hunchback if you recall is the story of the bell ringer from the Notre Dame Cathedral who forms a special friendship with Esmeralda the gypsy. Disney’s animated version grossed $325 million worldwide.Currently, David Henry Hwang is set to write the script. His prior productions include “M Butterfly”, which he won a Tony award for, “Chinglish” “Yellow Face” and “Aida” just to name a few. Producing the live-action play will be Josh Gad and Mandeville Films. Gad, as you know, was the voice of the fan favorite, Olaf in Disney’s Frozen. Gad also played LeFou in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast. Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken will score the music. Musically, Schwartz and Menken have achieved major accomplishments. Schwartz worked on “Wicked”, “Godspell”, and “Pippin”. Menken has eight Academy Awards to his name. His list includes “Beauty and the Beast”, “Aladdin”, and he scored the original Hunch Back of Notre Dame.Disney has been successful over the past few years turning popular animated movies into live action productions. Currently, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, and Alice in Wonderland have already been produced. Three more live action movies are set to debut in 2019. Dumbo will be released March 29th, 2019. But in August 2023, it was reported that plans for the movie had been scrapped, mainly because of Disney CEO Bob Iger. According to reports, Iger is not a big fan of the movie and didn’t consider it a priority on the remake list.Credit: DisneyNow, there are a lot of reasons that a studio decides to cancel a movie, and Hunchback has a lot of issues — from its central focus being religion to the fact that Quasimodo is made fun of by the people he was so desperate to meet.But “Hellfire” has to be one of the top reasons, as there is no way Disney could include the original song in the movie. They would have to either cut the song completely or have one of their talented writers come in for a complete rewrite.Now, a villain’s song is not always required for a movie — i.e., “Be Prepared” being removed from the live-action remake of The Lion King (1994). Though, it is important to note that Disney received a ton of backlash for cutting it out. Considering Disney’s apparent quest to produce a “live-action” remake of every single film in its library, this week’s announcement that The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be next should not come as much of a surprise. Indeed, to some, it serves as proof that Disney’s tireless effort to exploit its existing intellectual property has begun to approach the bottom of the barrel. That said, the Hunchback remake will also be interesting for another reason entirely: Netflix is already working on a live-action Hunchback adaptation of its own, which sets the two companies up for a fascinating duel.Deadline reports that Disney tapped Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang to write a musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, which will draw inspiration from Disney’s 1996 animated version. Announced Hunchback remake isn’t necessarily a direct response to Netflix’s own project; Deadline notes that David Hoberman, who co-runs Mandeville, has been stuck on the idea of a live-action Hunchback adaptation for decades, ever since he himself was president of Disney film. But still, given the two companies’ struggle for dominance, it will be interesting to see how the release dates for these projects work out, and how each fares with critics and audiences.As for the Netflix film? It was announced last May, with Idris Elba attached to star and produce the film, as well as its original music. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film has been described as a modern retelling and a “sonic and musical experience.” Michael Mitnick (The Current War, The Giver) will write the script, with Fred Berger (La La Land) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special) set to produce alongside Elba and Ana Garanito, who will also produce as part of Elba’s production shingle Green Door.
