Unlike a traditional step sequencer, the sequencer tracks in HY-RPE consist of four blocks which can be split into any number of steps between one and eight. So, a sequence can contain four sections (blocks) consisting of three, seven, two, and four steps, respectively. HY-Plugins has released HY-Cho/Fla, a freeware chorus/flanger combo effect in VST plugin format for Windows based digital audio workstations.The most active freeware developer of 2016 (so far, at least) is back with yet another deliciously simple and effective mixing tool for Windows users. HY-Cho/Fla is a 2-in-1 modulation effect, featuring both a chorus and a flanger in a single plugin. The two modes can be toggled using the 2-way switch on the left side of the user interface, so it’s really easy to pick your preferred modulation flavor on the fly.In terms of design, HY-Cho/Fla looks very similar to previous HY-Plugins releases. The GUI is clean and simple, with a streamlined workflow and easy to understand controls. The two modes come with two different color schemes and I sort of wish the light blue background used for the Chorus was a bit darker, but it’s just a matter of personal taste of course. Other than that, the interface looks perfect.The functionality and the sound quality is everything you’d expect from a piece of HY-Plugins software. Both modes come with just the right amount of control to provide enough versatility without getting complicated. Most of the control parameters are virtually the same in both modes, apart from the fact that the Chorus comes with two depth parameters and features a modulation depth parameter (the Flanger offers a couple of different flanging modes instead). Both the Chorus and the Flanger mode come with a pair of filters, along with dry and wet knobs for adjusting the balance of the dry and processed signal on the output. During our test, the CPU usage remained in the 4-8% range (on a single core of an i3 processor), which is reasonably low for this particular type of plugin.The download is a standard ZIP archive containing a DLL file which you can manually extract and copy to your VST plugins folder.
