@drbrittany, Welcome to the HP Support Community!I'm afraid this could be a hardware failure with the Scanner component in the printer. Let us try these steps that may resolve this issue.Reset the printer With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer. Wait at least 60 seconds. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.Update the printer firmwareClick here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.Check the scanner bar functionalityPerform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon. If the scanner light does not move, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed. If the scanner light moves half way or does not light up, the scanner component is broken. I had installed the hp Photosmart 5520 printer driver on my old Mac and everything worked. Note that this will reset all settings to default, so you'll need to reconfigure the printer afterward. To reset the printer, follow these steps: On the printer's control panel, go to the "Setup" menu. Navigate to "Printer Maintenance" or "Service" menu. Select "Restore" or "Reset," and then choose "Restore Factory Defaults." Confirm the reset. The printer will restart and restore all settings to default. But I can print from the computer so that's not true. Meanwhile, the computer puts up a sign saying "unable to connect with scanner."
