Two weeks after longtime Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin died unexpectedly, his successor will be sworn in on Friday.Hoke County commissioners picked Roderick Virgil on Monday to fill the remainder of Peterkin's term in office.Virgil said Wednesday that he's aware he and the rest of the sheriff's office "have some big shoes to fill.""He was a man of integrity," he said of Peterkin, whom he called his mentor, during an interview with WRAL News."He always had a vision. He was very passionate," he added. "We're going to continue his legacy."Virgil has been a reserve deputy with the sheriff's office for about a dozen years. He was a paramedic in 2008 when Peterkin recruited him to be the medic for the sheriff's office SWAT team. That required him to go through law enforcement training and certification.He said his combination of experience with the sheriff's office, EMS and a landscaping business have given him the communication skills and patience needed to be the top law enforcement official in the county."Whenever you're in this line of work, you have to be able to communicate with people," he said. "People want to know that they're accepted. ... They just want to be heard."Virgil said stability will be key to maintaining the well-oiled machine Peterkin created in the sheriff's office. So, he's keeping Chief Deputy David Newton in the role of his top assistant. The pair have known each other for years."It's easy to say, 'Yeah, I know him,'" Newton said. '[But] we've got to build a relationship now, and that all starts with trust."A Hoke County native, Virgil said his familiarity with the diverse population also will help."Everybody is special. Everybody is a person," he said. "I've never seen nothing but red blood from every race, and that's how I look at it. ... Nobody's better than nobody. I don't care what position you hold, we're all special."

Dissatisfaction with most other forms of English administration, after the Revolution all of the American states provided for the maintenance of the Office of Sheriff. Through constitutional provisions and charters, the Sheriff was vested with the authority to act as an executive of the state within his county. As a result, the Sheriff was often the highest governmental official within the Sheriff's county.Today, the Office of Sheriff has changed only slightly from its medieval origins. The Sheriff still retains ancient duties to preserve the peace and execute the law through the exercise of power as an officer of the sovereign government. The Office of Sheriff is still the chief law enforcement office of the county, although the growth of local police departments has shifted some of the Sheriff's responsibilities. Most importantly, the Office of Sheriff has not lost the dignity it has enjoyed since its inception. Like their Middle Ages counterpart, a Sheriff today continues to hold the respect and admiration of the citizens they protect.

Published 10:25 am Wednesday, September 15, 2021 The Butler County Sheriff’s Office worked alongside the Covington County Sheriff’s Office to apprehend a suspect with warrants in both counties.According to reports, the Covington County Incident Response Team and the Butler and Covington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call north of Red Level, just inside Conecuh County.Michael Dewayne Brogden, who had warrants from Butler County and misdemeanor warrants from Covington County, was hunkered down in his camper and refused to respond to law enforcement requests to come to the door. Email newsletter signupAfter multiple attempts to retrieve Brogden from his home without injury, the IRT attempted to enter the camper. Unfortunately, IRTS attempts were unsuccessful.Minutes later, tear gas was administered. Brogden became cooperative, and an arrest finally occurred. No injuries were reported.Brogden is currently being held in the Butler County Jail without bond.In a statement, Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman thanked everyone involved in the arrest in response to excellent work exhibited between agencies.“I commend all of the agencies involved,” Sheriff Turman stated. “Working together as one team will always be successful.
