While WBD was initially quick to try and placate fans that it didn't mean huge changes for their flagship streaming platform, later that same year the Batgirl movie was canceled, barely months before it was due to stream on HBO Max. WBD has made it clear they're moving away from focusing on exclusive streaming content. HBO Max was launched in 2020. After the DC Universe platform collapsed in 2021, HBO Max was slated to be the new home of DC streaming content and had a long list of upcoming exclusives attached. 2022 is a very different landscape than 2020 and 2021 though. Changing fortunes have led to the once-assured security of HBO Max DC shows into riskier territory. Batgirl was due to star, among others, Michael Keaton in his long-awaited return as Batman. Production was pretty much complete, too. If even a flagship property like Batgirl wasn't safe from cancelation, HBO Max DC shows based on relatively unknown properties like Strange Adventures and Justice League Dark have little to guarantee they'll make it to the screen. Abrams, Batman: Caped Crusader, is being compared to the canceled Batman: The Animated Series. In this reimagining of the Gotham City hero, Batman is a lone vigilante in the world, and there is no Justice League, no Robin, and Jim Gordon is not yet a friend. During DC FanDome (via Polygon), Timm revealed Batman: Caped Crusader will lean more heavily into noir and German expressionism. Fans can expect the animated series to premiere on HBO Max at some point. Justice League Dark Abrams is entering the DC realm, as he was initially announced to be developing a Justice League Dark universe that would consist of connected TV shows and films. The filmmaker is developing a series based on DC’s supernatural team for HBO Max. Aside from a planned 2021 premiere date (which is now likely shifted to 2023), details are being kept under wraps - including who will be part of the line-up for the HBO Max original.
