2025-03-31The developers of the GNS3 bring the major changes in architecture of new Version 2.x. Hereby, the step by step installation of the fantastic major release. These are the requirements for the installation:GNS3 Version 2.xInternet ConnectionCisco IOS images (Router, Switch) as per requirements.Installation of GNS3 Version 2.x on Windows 10. Step 1:Download the GNS3 software from Double click on the software and then follow the below installation instructions. You can choose any option as per your requirement.Step 2:In the Setup Wizard we will configure our GNS3. The IOS images which you will run during the configuration of the topology. Here you have a choice where do you want to run your GNS3 and IOS images. If you will get such error message quit from the Setup Wizard and open the Preferences from the Edit tab of GNS3.Under the Binary images sub-tab of General Preferences browse or select the folder where you have kept your IOS images. Now, add the IOS images by clicking on New button in the IOS routers, subtab 'IOS routers' of Dynamips. You can receive warring message in case of invalid IOS images. You can click on OK and take the next steps or select the another appropriate IOS image. For connecting the devices with each other we need to choose the Network adapter at the specific slot, we can also make these changes later.By selecting the correct Idle-PC value, we can prevent the IOS to over use of the CPU processing, and it is really very effective.Apply the changes and run the
2025-04-23As images specially created by Cisco for virtualized environments (Cisco VIRL images). You can easily add Virtual Machines (Windows, Linux or others) to your GNS3 topologies. GNS3 is a multi-vendor platform. You can integrate and test multivendor networks.Packet Tracer is not able to do any of that.GNS3 vs. VIRLCisco has released their official lab environment: The Cisco Virtual Internet Routing Lab (VIRL). This is commercial software, and a personal license costs $199 a year. The images that come with Cisco VIRL include Cisco IOSvL2 (advanced switching), IOSv (routing), ASAv (Cisco ASA firewall), and other software such as Nexus OS. This is great news for us as network engineers as we now have access to official Cisco device images which we can use in either GNS3 or Cisco VIRL topologies. GNS3 supports all Cisco VIRL images directly. These are the recommended images to use in GNS3 environments.VIRL limits the number of devices in a topology to 20 devices with the personal edition of the software. GNS3 does not do that. VIRL requires that you authenticate against a licensing server on a regular basis (every few days). GNS3 does not require that.GNS3 does not require an internet connection to verify a license like Cisco VIRL does, and it supports many more device types and devices in a single topology.Want to learn more? Or are you struggling to get GNS3 working?Fortunately, Udemy for Business offers courses that show your IT team all the steps needed to download and configure GNS3 and the various components. See how to sign up for a Udemy for Business subscription to get your IT team up to speed on GNS3. My official GNS3 courses on Udemy were created with Jeremy’s input including GNS3 Fundamentals Official Course Part 1 and GNS3 Fundamentals Official Course Part 2. Life has got
2025-03-29On Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04:I run a GNS3 Cloud appliance connected to a VM image.I also run a GNS3 NAT appliance connected to the same image. The images have been either Ubuntu 16.04 in October, November, and December in 2019.The images have been either Ubuntu 16.04 or Ubuntu 20.04 in April, May, June, and July of 2020.The GNS3 versions have been either 2.1.10 for both Ubuntu and Windows or2.2.10 for Ubuntu and 2.2. for Windows. On Ubuntu, I never see a problem. On Windows 10, the VM image is on the same subnet as the Windows host, but it has no default gateway forthat subnet. But it gets it's default gateway from the NAT. I download large amounts of data on the networksupplied by the NAT appliance and I recover it from Cloud appliance with my Windows 10 host.Mysterious posts have been showing up on the community about "pings stop working after awhile" or"disable/enable the VMnet interface" to fix some problem. Since October, I have been either deleting thelink to the Cloud, or deleting the Cloud. On Wednesday, the failure moved from very intermittent to, almost, clockwork every 20 minutes.Friday morning, I had to rearrange my logging so I could save all logs (VMware, Windows, GNS3) before opening up GNS3and also then clearing all logs before I started up GNS3. Then I save all logs, but do not clear all logs when I close GNS3.This took 8 hours for me to implement.. I have the failure recorded once, but I have not fully investigated the failure.I can narrow down the failure to within 1 minute.I am suspecting the VMware Pro and Windows 10 interaction, but that would take me about 40 hours to obtain the skill level to troubleshoot that interaction.I had to wipe out my usage of the NAT link because I can not now afford to get involved with troubleshooting this problem.I will let the guest qcow2 devices on my GNS3 VM on my Windows 10 host roll for 3 weeks on just the Cloud appliance to see if they encounter any problems. But as far as I am concerned, there is some kind of problem. So as far as I am concerned, if someone writes a post that pings stop working after awhile. Then I can respond back, it is being investigated, and then I can suggest a workaround.t
2025-04-14GNS3 (Graphical Network Simulator) is the most popular – open source, free software – tool for designing and simulating network infrastructure. GNS3 has 2 partsThe GNS3-all-in-one software (GUI) The GNS3 virtual machine (VM) This post is not meant for explaining GNS3; read GNS3 Documentation for more details. I just want to share the common mistake, which newbies do when setup GNS3. And the simple configuration to resolve the same. While setting up separate GNS3 VM, you need to enable KVM support for the GNS3 VM (even if you are using all in one). Because, most of the appliance need KVM support on GNS3 VM otherwise you won’t be able to import network appliance to GNS3. Ref: In my case, I am using GNS3 UI on a VM (Ubuntu with Graphics) and GNS3 VM on another VM; both are running on top of ESXi (ver 6.7.0). I have verified that Virtualization has been enabled for my ESXi physical host and tried to import an appliance.See, both remote server or GNS3 VM no supporting KVM. Still I proceeded with main server; I got error on GNS3 saying, “no KVM support”. So, I went to GNS3 VM console, yes NO KVM Support !Later I realized that, I missed to enable Virtualization for my GNS3 VM (on ESXi console) and proceeded with same.Verify the same on GNS3 VM console again.Great, now my GNS3 VM is supporting KVM I can proceed with importing appliance which need KVM support. If you are using VirtualBoxHappy news !!! VirtualBox 6.1 is supporting Nested Virtualization and you can use Local GNS3 VM in VirtualBox itself. You can enable Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V via VirtualBox Manager GUI or using VirtualBox CLI vboxmanage command.vboxmanage modifyvm Ubuntu --nested-hw-virt on(Where Ubuntu is my vm name)Enable Nested Virtualization on VirtualBoxEnjoy GNS3 !
