Gas mask, breathing device designed to protect the wearer against harmful substances in the air. The typical gas mask consists of a tight-fitting facepiece that contains filters, an exhalation valve, and transparent eyepieces. It is held to the face by straps and can be worn in association with a protective hood. The filter elements in the cheeks of the mask remove contaminants from the air that is drawn through the mask by the wearer’s inhaling. The filters, which can be replaced, clean the air but do not add oxygen to it (some masks are connected by a hose to a separate tank of oxygen). The most common filters employ fibre screens (to strain out finely divided solid particles) and chemical compounds such as charcoal (to capture or chemically alter poisonous gases in the air). Charcoal absorbs and holds a fairly large volume of poisonous gases.Gas masks are widely used by the world’s armed forces. Although it is possible to design filtering devices that will neutralize almost any specific toxic substance in the air, it is impossible to combine in one mask protection against all toxic substances. Military gas masks are accordingly constructed with a view to counteracting those chemicals that are thought most likely to be used in wartime. Gas masks are effective only against those chemical-warfare agents that are dispersed as true gases and are injurious when breathed. Agents such as mustard gas that are dispersed in liquid form and attack the body through the skin surface necessitate the use of special protective clothing in addition to gas masks. Introduction: Cardboard Gas Mask This gas mask is a great prop if you want to do an original apocalypse costume for Halloween. You could buy a fake gas mask... or you could have the satisfaction of having created an entirely customizable mask. WARNING: DO NOT WEAR INTO PUBLIC WITHOUT AN ADULT'S PERMISSION.In this day and age, you cannot wear something like this without good judgement.ANOTHER WARNING: THIS IS NOT A REAL GAS MASK. DO NOT WEAR IF A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE COMES AND THE UNFILTERED AIR CAN TURN YOU INTO A FLESH-EATING ZOMBIE.🧟SuppliesWhat you will need:Hobby knifeCardboard (one ply and shoebox cardboard)Premade salad greens containerHot glue gun (and glue (duh))RulerScissors5 inch piece of wireTweezers (optional)Paint (optional)Step 1: Step 1: NosepieceCut a strip of cardboard up to 2 feet in length. (Cut more, not less, because you can always cut extra off)Fold it in half and cut it to fit your face (see mug shot)Make sure it fits well before you glue the strip at the chin. You can alter the shape as well, just remember to compensate for any changes. Trace the inside of the ring and cut the traced part out. Hot glue it to the front of the mouth/nose guard. Then cut a small circle out in the bottom or center, and make a recessed well with shoebox cardboard. Cut a circle of shoebox cardboard and poke lots of holes in it. Glue in in the recessed well. You can also make a grill by glueing successive strips of cardboard in layers.Step 2: Step 2: Full Face Covering Part 1This is optional. You can modify this so it only covers your lower face.Take a piece of cardboard 2 ft by 3 ft (remember, there is no such thing as too big)Trace the nosepiece where it meets you face (onto cardboard, not your face (duh))Cut out your nosepiece tracing and place and glue the nosepiece in the gap. DO NOT GLUE THE CHIN UNTIL YOU FIT THE MASK TO YOUR FACE. Figure out where you want the eye pieces to be, and cut them out. Fit the mask to your face.Step 3: Step 2.1: Full Face Covering Part 2Glue the chin, AND MAKE SURE IT FITS YOUR FACE. Then, fold and bend and twist and yank and pound with a hammer(kidding) until the mask fits around your face, and cut off the top of the mask so it meets your hairline. Cut 3 triangles out of the top until you can make the top fit around your forehead. Then glue a 2 ft strap between the eyes (this will be the main support strap.)Glue a piece of shoebox cardboard over the forehead reaching to the top of the eyepiece holes.Glue
