Gaming’s most divisive question over the past few months has now moved to the mobile platform. Which one should you play? We’re here to help you decide. PUBG released in the West for both iOS and Android earlier this week, just five days after Fortnite’s limited invites were sent out to iOS players only. Eventually, Fortnite will release to everyone on both iOS and Android. To see which of the two mobile versions you should play, we tested both games on last year’s iPad. Performances may vary depending on your device, but for the sake of fairness, both titles were played on the same iPad on the same day. The fast take? PUBG seems to both run and look a lot better than Fortnite. PUBG is shockingly smooth, and graphically more crisp. The controls are more responsive, too. Draw distance is an issue with both games, but up close imagery just looks way cleaner in PUBG, whereas Fortnite has a bit of a problem with anti-aliasing, making everything look quite jaggy in comparison. Performance-wise, PUBG seems to run better on mobile, too. That’s surprising considering PUBG to this day has some performance issues even on high-end PC’s, but Fortnite runs like a dream on all kinds of rigs. Fortnite often chugs in certain areas of the map on mobile, and especially when jumping from the battle bus. PUBG isn’t without its performance flaws, but when comparing the two, PUBG easily looks, plays, and runs smoother. Controls PUBG translates way better to mobile controls than Fortnite. Part of that has to do with the fact that PUBG is naturally a slower and more methodical game than Fortnite’s hectic, build fast and move fast play style. The control scheme for both games are quite similar with on-screen buttons for crouching, jumping, and aiming, but Fortnite moreso rewards you for swift movements like quickly building towers. I love PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, but playing it can feel like banging my head against an armoured UAZ (without a level three helmet). I can play a two-hour session and—if I avoid dropping into populated areas—see perhaps three or four intense firefights. Or I might play for half an hour and come across one enemy, before falling to a headshot from a sniper that I never saw. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood for something that slow. And that’s where Fortnite Battle Royale shines.Some elements of PUBG have been transplanted almost unaltered into Fortnite: the ever-shrinking battle zone, the loot drops, the gliders that ease you from the sky to the ground. But Epic Games has built in some key differences, and those changes make encounters with enemies more frequent and matches faster. More shots fired means more chances of getting kills—and the adrenaline rush that goes with them. So while a chicken dinner is arguably tastier than a victory royale (because getting one is harder work), I find Fortnite’s 100-man battles more consistently fun.You can’t lie down in Fortnite, so if you’re hiding it’s normally going to be in a big, obvious building that will immediately draw fire.The first major change Fortnite makes is with its map, which is far smaller than PUBG’s. Packing 100 players into a tighter space automatically leads to more conflict. The map is small enough that you can get wherever you want when you dive off the Battle Bus, the equivalent of PUBG’s starter plane. So even in a distant corner of the map there’s always another player just over the next hill. I enjoy that constant tension—if I pick a less common drop spot in PUBG I can relax and loot at will. Fortnite doesn’t allow that luxury, and so my fingers grip

Be sure to have conversations about what is featured in Fortnite at the moment.‍Can kids interact with others on Fortnite?‍Yes, players interact and this is a huge draw to the game. Yes, it’s fun to play by yourself, but you can also team up with a friend, or group of friends to compete as a team. If you don’t have friends to play with, you can make a team with strangers. As teamwork is needed to win these games, your kid might be talking to others online – and even if they aren’t, the strangers on their team might be talking to them. You can also request to be friends with people and continue playing more games together. Be sure to get those parental controls set and have brutally open discussions with your kids about who they should and shouldn’t be chatting with.‍What is LEGO Fortnite?‍This is one of the brand-new titles Epic Games has been working on (launched December 2023). Their partnership with LEGO has branched into a whole new game! It has similar elements to Minecraft, but it’s set in the universe of Fortnite. Rated E10+‍‍Create a world, then start exploring, crafting, gathering resources, fighting off monsters, petting friendly animals (you can also kill them for additional resources), and defeating bosses for special rewards.‍‍After creating a world, you get to choose a few settings to determine the experience. Again, similar to Minecraft, you can customize the experience for survival or a more creative sandbox style where you have all the resources you need to start building! There are a few different world options, and it’s important to note that you can’t go back and change them after making a world.‍‍As you can see with the “Friendly Creatures” setting, hovering over each setting describes how it impacts the world. Feel free to go through the options and see what combination would be most fitting for your child and their gaming experience. For younger users, we recommend playing in a Sandbox world, or a Survival world with Enemies, Hunger, Stamina, and Elimination turned off.‍To play with others in LEGO Fortnite, you must invite others to join your world. To see the worlds you can join, select “Shared Worlds” before choosing which world to play.‍‍Once you’re in the game, it looks like great fun running around as a LEGO figure – similar to many LEGO games, but in this case, there are some extra Fortnite-like elements that kids will greatly enjoy. Fortnite you feel like you have less to lose, so you’re more willing to go weapons free. It’s quite liberating knowing that you might as well go for that impossible sprint-and-spraydown on the off chance that it works. If you pull it off then you’ll be on a high (and pocket a great gameplay clip), and if goes wrong you’ll have another chance in five minutes’ time.If you do pull off those big plays and make it to Fortnite’s endgame, you’re going to have more fun than in PUBG. Because you can lie prone in PUBG, battles between the final few players sometimes descend into a pair of belly-on-the-ground snakes squirming through the tall grass until one gets bored and pops their head up, or three players in ghillie suits cosying up to trees to try and stay hidden the longest. You can’t lie down in Fortnite, so if you’re hiding it’s normally going to be in a big, obvious building that will immediately draw fire. And even if you do get a good hiding spot, the bright colour palette makes it easier for enemies to pick you out. Again, this encourages aggression. Earlier this month it added jump pads, which send you into the sky and let you drop into an enemy base. When players discovered an exploit that allowed them to surf teammates’ rockets to get closer to enemies, Epic left it in the game. Both hand the advantage to the aggressor, and make camping less viable. It’s surely a signal of what’s to come, and shows that Epic knows there’s
