Adobe Illustrator has been the go-to choice for vector graphics creation and editing for years, but with newer software programs like Figma entering the market, it begs the question: Can Figma read Illustrator files?The short answer is yes, Figma can read Illustrator files. It’s important to note, however, that not all aspects of an Illustrator file will be retained when imported into Figma. This is because Figma has its own unique features and tools that may not be supported by Illustrator. For this reason, it’s best to use Figma’s native file formats when creating and editing vector graphics.That said, there are ways to bring an Illustrator file into Figma. The first way is to simply drag and drop an AI file into your Figma project. This will convert the AI file into a Figma-compatible format and make it editable in the program. Another way is to use a third-party plugin such as Illustrator2Figma. This plugin converts an AI file into a compatible format for use in Figma.It should also be noted that while you can import AI files into your projects in Figma, they cannot be exported back out of the program in AI format. This means that any changes made to an AI document in Figma will have to be saved as a different file type if they are to be used outside of the program.In conclusion, while it is possible to read Illustrator files with Figma, it’s important to understand that not all aspects of an AI document will be retained when imported. Much like Nvidia had done when watchdog scrutiny became too intense, Adobe threw in the towel, saying in December 2023 that both it and Figma disagreed with the regulators' findings "but we believe it is in our respective best interests to move forward independently."
