They can sound very similar.I actually just posted this comparison vid today comparing the two: UAD 1176 Plug-ins vs EL Hardware Distressors - YouTubeExcellent! I actually prefer the plugin in that example, the kick sounds boomy through the Distressor. To perfectly match them, you could parallel the kick through something else. #13 On my Distressors (vocal use) I'm usually 6:1, HPF in the detector, and Distortion 2. A few dB of crush. The Fatso doesn't have the friendly mid level comp (6-8dB) that the Distressor has. It starts to pump too much. Just hitting it a bit, though, is quite Distressor like, but so is hitting it hard (10dB plus). On Fatso, use tracking comp mode, HP in the detector (120Hz, normally). Start with Warm 3. Try others - they get more aggressive, or more "warm", depending on the setting. Use transformer. Found this old thread, nice recommendations for the Fatso Matt, thanks for sharing. Modded the Fatso to great success.[video=youtube;HBHoAH6JMEA] is a free demo:sly-fi-digitalThis is an awesome plugin ... I very rarely use that word, but Gregory's Deflector is a 100% go to for me for anything 'distressor' these days. #17 I found that adding an 1176 after the Fatso so the 1176 does the actual compression and the Fatso the distortion, it is really really sweet as well. That's why there needs to be a Fatso MK2, a Fatso with the 1176 MK2 algorithm built-in. #18 It's thanks to you Eric (saying that the fatso compression sounds like legacy 1176 compression) that I thought to try the mkII 1176 after the fatso to handle the compression. Thanks for the inspiration! Works real nicely! #19 Whilst the idea of a fatso mk2 is fab, I have to say I'd rather they did a Distressor first ... #20 Found this old thread, nice recommendations for the Fatso Matt, thanks for sharing. In my recent search for a Distressor replacement, I've tried out your settings, followed by an 1176 rev A with the attack off and have been getting some really juicy results. Or the 1176 rev A in All Buttons mode (slowest attack with fastest release) with just a tickle of gain reduction adds some nice grit and distortion after the Fatso! I've also enjoyed the AE rev on slo attack in all buttons mode!I don't have a Distressor to test it against, but combining the 1176 mkII as tone boxes after the fatso creates

A fan of the over the top super squashed mixes where instruments seem smeared all over eachother as opposed to glued together..Thought it'd be worth mentioning that. post edited by stm113cw - 2016/10/01 23:03:47 Fleer Max Output Level: 0 dBFS Total Posts : 8715 Joined: 2014/08/29 10:17:45Location: Boston/Cambridge Status: offline Re: Waves CLA 2A & 3A which one? 2016/10/01 23:45:12 (permalink) Just wondering if Slate's upcoming FG-Stress (authorized Distressor plugin) wouldn't be a better choice. Note that you need iLok though. Intro price will be $149 but it covers all sorts of comps including opto. It odes have some great "character" with it. Especially on vocals and clean guitar. If this helps, do you have the CW CA-2A plug? If so, then it's a real close (I think better) to the CLA-2A. So you have that covered. Grab the 3A and see what you think. You can demo them (CLA-2a/3A) both also. I am trying to round out my compressor selection. Other that the stock comps that come with Sonar I have the softube FET which is based on the 1176 and the Focusrite Red 3 for my VCA needs so I guess I need an opto style,

Awesome! A must-have IMHO. #7 Wow, bx_refinement is pretty awesome! A must-have IMHO. Looks like some sort of mastering level de-esser?Are you demoing this now?It looks like an interesting corrective tool. Any chance for destruction? The good kind? #8 I do like the BX stuff but where are all the plugins from the companies UA partnership with but done BY UA? I mean, where are the Manley, Distressor, MXR and so on... Years have gone and we just got FATSO and MASSIVEPASSIVE (own both and LOVE them). #9 Looks like some sort of mastering level de-esser?Are you demoing this now?It looks like an interesting corrective tool. Any chance for destruction? The good kind? Yeah, I'm running the demo. It looks like another one of those tools like VOG and Waves Vitamin that combines existing processing techniques into a convenient package. It's all about the workflow. It combines an EQ or de-esser of about 1.5 octave width tuned to 3.1khz, M/S options, tube sat, make-up presence, and wet/dry. I like it, it puts it all together nicely; this is the sort of task where you need to find a sweet spot, and this makes it easy. Years have gone and we just got FATSO and MASSIVEPASSIVE (own both and LOVE them). There are still UA releases. Last time we got the 610 Collection, previously we got the API Vision, Pultec and Fairchild Collections and Ocean Way. Quality takes a while, I think that's one of the reasons why they've brought in third party developers, just to keep the promotional crew busy. It's
