HP is now debuting a totally new OneView platform that has been designed from the ground up for converged HP infrastructure management.Bryan Jacquot, Chief Technologist for HP Converged Infrastructure, explained to ServerWatch that HP OpenView-branded offerings are generally focused on heterogeneous environments covering a wide range of management capabilities. In contrast, the new HP OneView will offer many integration points into HP Software’s portfolio.“It has deep knowledge of HP BladeSystem, Virtual Connect, and ProLiant servers, so it can handle detailed configuration minutiae and firmware dependencies for you,” Jacquot said. We have benchmarked the time from installing HP OneView up to getting an entire hypervisor cluster operational – and did it in just 75 minutes.”Jacquot added that OneView will have extensibility into the HP Software portfolio that provides heterogeneous infrastructure support.Among the many capabilities provided by OneView is the ability to deploy firmware across HP BladeSystem enclosures, servers and Virtual Connect modules. Jacquot noted that this includes initial provisioning of firmware as well as ongoing firmware maintenance. NetworkingThe OneView solution will also help with VLAN network creation. Jacquot explained that HP OneView provides VLAN management through the network edge with Virtual Connect. That capability allows admins to add and remove networks rapidly. “HP OneView provides a rich set of RESTful APIs and a message bus that enables a broad set of integration with virtually any platform, including HP Networking’s IMC platform,” Jacquot said.Storage is also part of the mix, with automated configuration of HP 3PAR direct attach storage connectivity.VirtualizationJacquot explained that HP OneView is OS and hypervisor agnostic for the resources it is managing. “HP OneView provides several capabilities that are highly valued by virtualization administrators,” Jacquot said. “Deployment of a 16-node cluster can take as little as 14 minutes of admin time — 12 times faster than manual operations.”While OneView can handle much of HP’s portfolio, HP’s AppSystem portfolio, which includes converged systems with applications, is not ready for OneView. “The HP OneView initial release is focused on converged infrastructure management and not yet on the HP AppSystem solutions,” Jacquot said.Overall, Jacquot noted that HP has a broad portfolio of industry-leading hardware and software capabilities. “HP OneView is strategic to infrastructure management for HP,” he said.Sean Michael Kerner is a senior editor at ServerWatch and InternetNews.com.
