DDG as search engine on Safari or DDG app? : r/duckduckgo

Oct 22, 2018 #13 OK. A little odd. I collected duckduckgo for the experiment. Normally I use Google search. Selected DDG as the default and deleted googleMy search engine is now DDGView attachment 9333DDG is my default search engine, but the alternative in that list is bing, and the 'remove' button is greyed-out so I can't remove it. When I open a new tab, it brings up the bing page, but if I ignore that and use the top line to search then it uses DDG. #14 The usual subversive behaviour from Ms, methinks.Sorry I cant offer more. DDG is not too familiar for me and there are various reasons why I am unable to use it. #15 The usual subversive behaviour from Ms, methinks.Sorry I cant offer more. DDG is not too familiar for me and there are various reasons why I am unable to use it. Thanks anyway Dave... I suspect that MS have intimately entwined Edge with bing (hence the greying-out of the 'remove' button) so I may just have to put up with using the top line to search. Duckduckgo Plus. Won’t be possible unless there’s a modification to the terms. Weinberg has assured users that the DuckDuckGo browser prevents trackers from third-party opportunists. But the only ongoing exposure is to Microsoft due to the agreement. He, however, disclosed that they would open the discussion with the company soon to fix the clauses.Apart from disclosing the agreement with Microsoft, DuckDuckGo has also tweaked its description from claiming to be utterly anonymous to revealing exception addition. It now shows that the search engine is blocking “most” hidden third-party trackers instead of all. Also, DDG now indicates in its “Help Section” that the engine shares data with Microsoft. The details show that it has partnered with Microsoft for relevant ads in a privacy-enhanced manner. According to the details, if a user clicks on an ad now, a redirect link will take him to the advertising landing pages but through the Microsoft platform. Privacy options for internet usersThe internet is filled with criminals targeting users’ data and sensitive personal information. This is why many cases of data breaches, exploits, hacks, identity theft, and doxxing have become the other of the day. So, if you want to stay unscathed while comfortably using the internet, take some actions to ensure your security. Some of the things you can do include: Use privacy-centric search enginesAs things stand, it seems DuckDuckGo is not as private as many believe. Even though DuckDuckGo has failed in its claims of protecting users’ privacy, there are still some private search engine alternatives to

Search query.[92][93] As of April 2024, DuckDuckGo also makes money from subscription fees paid to access Privacy Pro.DonationsThe company supports charitable organizations that work to improve privacy; in 2021 they donated US$1 million to these causes and had donated $3,650,000 over the previous decade. Major donations for 2021 included $200,000 to the Center for Information Technology Policy, $150,000 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, $75,000 to European Digital Rights (EDRi) and $75,000 to The Markup.[94]Some of DuckDuckGo's source code is free and open-source software hosted at GitHub under the Apache 2.0 License,[95] but the core is proprietary.[96] DuckDuckGo also hosted DuckDuckHack, a sister site for organizing open source contributions and community projects. The search engine's Instant Answers are open source[97] and are maintained on GitHub, where anyone can view the source code. As of August 31, 2017, DuckDuckHack was placed on maintenance mode; as such, only pull requests for bug fixes will be approved.[75][needs update]In a June 2011 article, Harry McCracken of Time commended DuckDuckGo, comparing it to his favorite hamburger restaurant, In-N-Out Burger:It feels a lot like early Google, with a stripped-down home page. Just as In-N-Out doesn't have lattes or Asian salads or sundaes or scrambled eggs, DDG doesn't try to do news or blogs or books or images. There's no auto-completion or instant results. It just offers core Web search—mostly the "ten blue links" approach that's still really useful, no matter what its critics say ... As for the quality, I'm not saying that Weinberg has figured out a way to return more relevant results than Google's mighty search team. But DuckDuckGo ... is really good at bringing back useful sites. It all feels meaty and straightforward and filler-free ...[98] The bare-bones approach cited in his quote has since changed; for instance, DuckDuckGo now has auto-completion, instant results, and a news tab. McCracken included the site in Time's list of "50 Best Websites of 2011."[99]Thom Holwerda, who reviewed the search engine for OSNews, praised its privacy features and shortcuts to site-specific searches as well as criticizing Google for "tracking pretty much everything you do", particularly because of the risk of such information being subject to a U.S. government subpoena.[100] In 2012, in response to accusations that it was a monopoly, Google identified DuckDuckGo as a competitor. Weinberg was reportedly "pleased and entertained" by that acknowledgment.[9]In November 2019, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey revealed his preference for using the DuckDuckGo search engine rather than Google, stating, "I love @DuckDuckGo. My default search engine for a while now. The app is even better!".[101] Conservative political commentators Ben Shapiro and Dan Bongino have also endorsed DuckDuckGo.[102]On March 1, 2022, in response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, DuckDuckGo paused its partnership
