December 24, 2024 ST JAMES, Jamaica — Thee men were reportedly shot and killed in a confrontation with police early Tuesday morning in the St James community of Orange.According to a report from Area One police chief, Assistant Commissioner Glenford Miller, cops were on patrol in the Hellgate section of Orange about 6:00am, searching for persons of interest, when the confrontation occurred.The men allegedly shot at the police who returned fire, fatally hitting the suspects.The identities of the deceased men are still being ascertained. However, Miller said that one of them is believed to be linked to criminal activities in Rose Heights.Three firearms were also removed from the scene. A farm in a nondescript Astoria building is producing such a bumper crop that its owner just hired that rarest of New York City worker: a farm manager.The Hellgate Farm, a combined rooftop and backyard venture that encompasses about a tenth of an acre and boasts chickens and bees, expects to double the number of vegetables it harvests this season, its third in business.“This isn’t a large amount of space, but we’re growing a lot of food,” said city engineer turned urban farmer Rob McGrath, 28. “You can grow food anywhere — even in a city backyard, in containers, and on roofs.”McGrath and his newly hired farm director Anna Poaster, 23, planted fruits and vegetables including strawberries, squash and eggplants, in Astoria’s only commercial farm.Poaster said she grew the produce from seeds in the basement of her Bedford-Stuyvesant building. She expects to harvest about 1,500 pounds of tomatoes this summer.Now, rows of tomatoes burst out of plastic buckets lining the top level of the roof of McGrath’s home.
