| April 22, 2017 | | Comments count:0 Well, they’ve been promising us this for a really, really long time, but it seems like James Cameron and crew are serious about it now. Avatar 2 is now officially in production, and they’re also getting right to work on three additional sequels. In other words, there are now four Avatar movies in the pipeline, and they’ve even given us release dates. Here’s what we’ve got: Avatar 2 – December 18, 2020Avatar 3 – December 17, 2021 Avatar 4 – December 20, 2024Avatar 5 – December 19, 2025So it will take over a decade from the release of the first Avatar film (which was released in 2009 and took in $2.7 billion globally) to get us that initial sequel. Why is there a three year gap between Avatar 3 and Avatar 4? That’s anybody’s guess. Maybe James Cameron is hoping these will be fully immersive VR experiences by then or something. Here’s the official announcement, just in case you don’t believe us.Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avengers: Endgame was released three years ago, eventually knocking Avatar from the #1 spot at the all-time global box office. 20th Century Studios wouldn't take the second spot for long, as a re-release came later that year, reclaiming the #1 spot the film held for ten years. Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to arrive later this year, on Dec. 16, and the studio is looking to recoup the rumored $250 million budget spent on producing the film. It's been 13 years since Avatar first arrived in theaters, and the team behind Way of Water wants to ensure audiences remember the movie exists while piquing fans' interest ahead of the sequel. The Avatar re-release, scheduled for Sept. 23, won't include any extra scenes or VFX improvements. However, the film will be upgraded with a stunning 4K HDR transfer, allowing the world of Pandora to be brighter and more immaculate than ever before. Some improved crystal clear visuals are shown in the trailer, which was released on the official Avatar YouTube channel earlier today, Aug. 23. Avatar starred Sam Worthington in the lead role alongside Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Joel David

Isn't quite a confirmation that Diesel will have a role in the Avatar sequels. At the same time, his long pause before he answered felt very telling, and his reveal that he'll be working with Cameron points towards Diesel appearing in the Avatar world. He could have been referring to another project, but as Cameron is pretty booked with Avatar 2 through 5, it seems likely Diesel meant the sci-fi franchise. This would be another major series to add to Diesel's filmography following his roles in Fast & Furious and the MCU. Cameron's plans for Avatar are shrouded in secrecy, so it's no surprise that Diesel would have to choose his words carefully about a potential role in the sequels. It could be that he's playing a Na'vi pivotal to the story, or even that he's a new villain in the vein of Lang's Quaritch. At this point, the possibilities are endless. The only thing that seems clear is that he probably won't be in the initial movies. Since the first Avatar sequel is still well over a year away, it might be a while before Diesel sheds more light on his collaboration with Cameron, so the speculation may continue in earnest. Led to Solo becoming Star Wars' first box office failure, making just $393.2 million. This was all then compounded by The Rise of Skywalker. This was the end of the Skywalker saga, and so should have been a celebration of over 40-years of cinema, rounding out one of the most beloved franchises in history. Avengers: Endgame, which had a similar task in completing the Infinity Saga, became the highest grossing movie ever, but The Rise of Skywalker was again divisive, and only just scraped past the $1 billion mark. There's no way to sell that other than The Rise of Skywalker being a disappointment, and part of a downward trend in general for Star Wars movies. Avatar Sequels Have More Hype (& A Clearer Plan) Than Upcoming Star Wars Movies The Avatar sequels are still some way off - Avatar 2 releases in December 2022, and Avatar 5 won't arrive until 2028, with other dates staked out in 2024 and 2026 - but there's already a fair level of hype and interest for the films. While Avatar hasn't been as fondly thought of in the past decade as its mammoth box office would suggest, Cameron is still a popular filmmaker, and there's a lot of intrigue as to what he'll do next with the franchise, especially in terms of its new technology. The various comments from cast and crew, alongside some lush concept art, all help to give a loose idea of what to expect from the first of many Avatar sequels, while still keeping the bigger details a mystery. By the time of release, Avatar 2 will have come full circle from the initial wave of interest to its dismissal to being a major part of pop-culture again, and that should see it succeed at the box office, even
