Skip to content Window Placement in New Home Construction The question of window placement often comes up in the process of designing a new home, and with good reason. The placement, style, size, and quality of windows can make (or break!) a design.Windows play a critical role in three important aspects of home design. The first is appearance. After the shape of your house, windows influence your home’s curb appeal. The second element is site embrace. Windows give you a view of the outdoors and connect the inside and outside world. Last, windows are about comfort. They let in light, fresh air, and protect against the weather.Anyone building a new home should get familiar with the basics of window placement because windows are expensive to move or add later if you get it wrong.AppearanceAppearance refers to how your home looks, and the challenge for window placement is to ensure it looks good on both the inside and outside.Often the exterior placement takes a backseat to the interior on the back and side of a house. However, it’s vital on the front of your home, especially depending on your chosen home style. Imagine a Colonial-style house without rows of symmetrical sash windows with grid pattern glass. If you can, you’d probably say it isn’t a Colonial-style home. When you’re building a new home in a new home community, the good news is that a lot of the placement considerations have already been made when a model home plan was designed.Things that an architect considers for window placement when designing home plans are:Aligning windows to prevent a haphazard appearance.Being consistent with landscape or portrait orientation for windows.Using novel shapes sparingly for visual interest without looking disjointed.Keeping window sizes to the same ratio to avoid an unbalanced-looking home. (The ratio is found by dividing Points, 11 points when I round it down.Result: 11 ptsGameplay: (20 pts)Moderate. The level is quite long, so that’s good. But there are three big problems when I look at the gameplay. Firstly it’s the XP-window, because it disturbs me when I want to see where I like to go. The second problem is – and I think you already guessed it right – the virus error-message. It distracts me. And the third one is the pit. If you fall in there, you have to cheat, or if you don’t know it, you have to reset the game and that’s very frustrating!Result: 7 ptsStory: (10 pts)There is no story. Jupiterimages/Comstock/Getty Images Registers are the vent openings that your HVAC system uses. Their placement is decided when your home is first built or when the duct work is being remodeled. If you have a chance to install new registers in a remodeling project, keep in mind that they are designed to supply air to your home after it has gone through the system and return air back to the units. Height HeightWhen it comes to height, return registers are flexible. The goal of a return register is to get air back to its starting place. Ceiling jumper ducts can connect rooms to make this easier — even leaving doors open plays an important role. Transfer grilles, door undercuts and wall grilles are all acceptable means to allow air to flow around the house. The supply vents, which push air through the duct work, must be placed properly. In this case, their height will be determined by your system. Many have duct work in crawlspaces, so the registers are placed in the floor. Attic systems may use registers placed in the ceiling instead. Room Placement Room PlacementThe goal of good register placement is to keep the house as evenly heated or cooled as possible. To this end, every large room should have a supply register in it. Some supply registers may be connected and looped together in a web-like pattern while others terminate at several key end points. Either way, a register for each room will create even airflow throughout the home. Window Placement Window PlacementIf you look at the registers that are already in your home, you may notice that they tend to be close to windows. Windows allow heat transfer more easily, so the air that hits them becomes cool and sinks. This may seem a strange place for the supply vent, but it is by design. The warm air pushed from the supply vent can create a buffer layer against the window that keeps other air from being cooled. Follow this window placement strategy wherever possible. Pro Tools Window Configurations offer a great way to organize your session to your specifications and easily jump between screen sets and options. You can also easily import these settings into any session, making navigation and operation easier and quicker across a range of projects.First, start by creating your ideal setup for any one scenario. For tracking, you could populate your Edit window with I/O, Inserts, Markers, Instruments or whatever else would keep you from having to navigate back and forth between the Mix and Edit windows. The intention is to allow you to run the system from one screen during a busy tracking date. You could save and call this configuration “Tracking;” however, for editing, you’d want the minimum of extras in the Edit window so you could view and manipulate large regions easily. These are just two examples but you can save as many configurations as you’d like, then easily navigate between them with one click. (Be sure to download the sample Pro Tools 8 session with Tracking, Editing, and Mixing configuration examples.) Figure 1: Creating a New ConfigurationTo save a configuration, first open Window Configurations from Pro Tools’ Window pulldown at the top of the screen or use the quick key (Command + Option +J). The Window Configurations pop-up will appear. Click on the round button at the top and choose New Configuration from the menu (see Fig. 1). Figure 2: Naming a ConfigurationThis will bring up a new window where you can name your configuration and choose the type of configuration you’d like (see Fig. 2). The Window Layout option is my favorite because it snaps the windows to the position you saved them in making it easier to recover from any chaotic placement created during the session. Choose OK from this window to save the configuration.Comments
