This works best if you can isolate infected machines (You can watch Wireshark for long queries to junk domain names) to see if they’re infected, at worst case.Generally the ‘patient zero’ in a conficker infection is an older unpatched machine. Back in 2009, it was estimated that about 9 to 15 million computers around the world were infected with Conficker, a computer worm that can infect a machine and automatically spread itself to other computers on the network, with no interaction from the user. The first version of the Conficker worm was detected in the wild back in 2008. The worm has been making the rounds online since then; Microsoft reported in mid-2011 that some 1.7 million machines were infected with the worm. To address the Conficker worm threat, Enigma Software Group released the free Conficker Removal Tool. It is a software application that will scan your Windows operating system, detect the Conficker worm, and remove it. If your system is not infected with the worm, the Conficker Removal Tool will tell you that it did not find the Conficker worm on your system. To start using the Conficker Removal Tool you need only to download it off the web and onto your computer; you do not need to install it. The download will complete in a blink as it is a lightweight 491KB. All you have to do next is run the executable you downloaded. You will be presented with the Conficker Removal Tool’s interface and you will have to press Start. A wizard will then guide you through the removal process of the Conficker worm. Do not forget that a reboot is required for every step of the process. If the Conficker Removal Tool does not detect the Conficker worm on your system, it will present a “Conficker Not Found” prompt. You can go ahead and exit the application. Please note that when you exit, your default browser will launch and you will be directed to a survey page on the Enigma Software Group website. You will be asked to recount your experience with the free Conficker Removal Tool – if you want to of course. It must be mentioned here that Microsoft released a patch for the Conficker worm and that antivirus solutions detect the worm as well. So if you have a patched and up-to-date systemSophos Conficker Clean-up Tool - Techniqued- Technoloy
Typical user runs scan, it returns no findings, user thinks system is safesecurity software can not compensate for what a user does not know Well said! Like UAC, Windows firewall, WD, this group of things belong to what one can term "feel good" security. Running them makes one feel safe but actually they are doing much, much less than what is the common assumption. They are actually dangerous because one may still "feel good" while actually have a terminal disease. #13 I could download it without any problem using a common email.I really did not know that there was this free disinfection tool, which is seen in the video, has to improve. Thanks for this post, it convinced me to investigate further.I'd seen the 'business address email' notification in the past when I'd tried to download Sophos Scan & Clean, so I tried again today using a Yahoo email that I use for unimportant registrations, sign-ups etc and I got the same result, as the screenshot shows. Then I made another attempt to download it with another personal email address and a VPN using a USA server, this also resulted in the same 'business' email issue failure. I'm in the UK BTW. So I tried again, with a different personal email address and using a VPN to suggest that I'm in Argentina ;-) Hey ho, result, thanks. Now I can scan using Sophos Scan & Clean knowing that I'll get a clean bill of health thanks to cruelsister's research!Ssshh, don't tell Sophos!Edit - I should have stated that the business email issue may arise due to the "End user Terms of Use & Export Compliance" regulations. #15 That is annoying / unnecessary of Sophos, try this link: Cybersecurity Delivered | Sophos Security Solutions Thanks, but clicking through from the landingSophos Conficker Clean-up Tool 1.3 - warp2search.net

It disables several important system services and security products and downloads arbitrary files. Also Known As:TA08-297A (other) CVE-2008-4250 (other)VU827267 (other) Win32/Conficker.A (CA)Mal/Conficker-A (Sophos) Trojan.Win32.Agent.bccs (Kaspersky)W32.Downadup.B (Symantec) Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.aqfw (Kaspersky)W32/Conficker.worm (McAfee) Trojan:Win32/Conficker!corrupt (Microsoft)W32.Downadup (Symantec) WORM_DOWNAD (Trend Micro) Confickr (other) Microsoft strongly recommends that users apply the update referred to in Security Bulletin MS08-067 immediately. Microsoft also recommends that users ensure that their network passwords are strong to prevent this worm from spreading via weak administrator passwords. Visit Microsoft for more information. Home users can apply a simple test for the presence of a Conficker/Downadup infection on their home computers. The presence of a Conficker/Downadup infection may be detected if a user is unable to surf to their security solution website or if they areunable to connect to the websites, by downloading detection/removal tools available free from those sites:SymantekMicrosoftMcAfeeIf a user is unable to reach any of these websites, it may indicatea Conficker/Downadup infection. The most recent variant ofConficker/Downadup interferes with queries for these sites, preventing a user from visiting them. If a Conficker/Downadupinfection is suspected, the system or computer should be removedfrom the network or unplugged from the Internet - in the case forhome users.Impact: A remote, unauthenticated attacker could execute arbitrary code ona vulnerable system. Readers should note that much is not known about this worm so the information in this white paper should NOT be considered as 100% complete. It is believed that not all machines infected with conficker will exhibit symptoms immediately. This worm has "call home" capailities whereby the worm will check in (with the worm author, presumably) periodically for instructions. It is estimated that millions of computers worldwide have already been infected with this worm. Needless to say, this infection would create a substantial "botnet" that could be used to wreak havoc on the Internet. What does the Conficker worm do?: The Conficker worm has created secure infrastructure for cybercrime. The worm allows its creators to remotely install software on infected machines. What will that software do? The short answer is that no one (except the authors) know. Most likely the worm will be used to create a botnet that will be rented out to criminals who want to send SPAM, steal IDs and direct users to online scams and phishing sites. The Conficker worm mostly spreads across networks. If it finds a vulnerable computer, it turns off the automatic backup service, deletes previous restore points, disables many security services, blocks access to a number of security web sites and opens infected machines to receive additional programs from the malware's creator. The worm then tries to spread itself to other
