Read our review of Redwood on Broadway, a new musical starring Tony Award winner Idina Menzel and co-created by Menzel, director Tina Landau, and songwriter Kate Diaz.In the wake of the wildfires that devastated the greater Los Angeles area just last month, the new Broadway musical Redwood takes on an extra gravity. At the show's climax, flames threaten to engulf the redwood forest where a woman named Jesse (Idina Menzel) is all but trapped on a platform high in a tree. I was gripped with perhaps even more terror than Jesse, who, after spending 90 minutes running from grief and guilt over her only son's death, becomes determined to stick firmly by that tree, which has become her new lifeline. The fact that my emotional response was inspired by January's events, however, rather than from the action as played out on stage, is evidence of a weakness that extends throughout Redwood: It largely tells its characters' struggles rather than showing them. Anyone can sympathize with Jesse's unimaginably deep sorrow, which propels her on an impulsive cross-country trip to California — but one wishes the musical showed more of the relationship between Jesse, her son, Spencer (Zachary Noah Piser), and her wife, Mel (De'Adre Aziza), whom she left behind. We get one extended flashback in which Spencer and Mel perform a homespun rap for Jesse's birthday, which proves one of the show's most effective moments. So, too, are the two noteworthy songs in Kate Diaz's score, both sung by Becca, one of two botanists who meets Jesse in the forest and introduces her to the world of the redwoods. In the role, a standout Khaila Wilcoxon is just as tender when guiding Jesse, and us, through arboreal history in "Little Redwood" as she is fiercely firm in "Becca's Song," where she shares herComments

2025-04-22Idea of what the space would actually look and feel like once it’s all in place. Planning the bed layout at our new homestead, using boards to get a rough plan before assembling the beds. I marked the area with stakes and string, then built the raised beds on a nearby patio area as a flat work surface.Another tool you could utilize is the Homestead and Chill free garden planning toolkit. It includes a plot plan you can use to sketch your ideas out, to scale on grid paper. It also includes a companion planting chart and planting calendars for every USDA hardiness zone!Best Raised Bed Wood OptionsYou can build DIY raised garden beds out of a wide variety of wood, depending your personal preferences, budget, and what is available in your area. An ideal wood choice will be long-lasting, sustainable, and safe! Redwood and cedar are the most popular, high-quality wood options to build long-lasting raised beds. They’re both beautiful, durable, rot-resistant, and will last at least a decade or two on their own! Redwood is typically most available on the west coast, while cedar is more common in the eastern US. We usually use heart redwood to build our raised beds, which is even more dense and long-lasting than common construction redwood (but has gotten really pricey nowadays). Redwood is also naturally resistant to termites. Neither redwood nor cedar needs to be stained or sealed in any way. However, you could treat them with a non-toxic wood sealer to even further extend their life if you wish. Softer woods like pine or Douglas fir are good middle-of-the-road choices. They are more affordable, which makes them very appealing if you’re on a budget! However, expect raised garden beds made from pine or fir to last about 3 to 7 years on average, depending on climate. The thicker and larger the boards, the more durable your DIY garden beds will be! For instance, 2-inch thick boards will last much longer than thinner 1-inch cedar fence pickets, and 2×6” or 2×8” boards will outlast 2x4s. That’s also why we use hefty 4x4s for the inner corners to hold the bed together! I do not recommend building raised garden beds from treated lumber, unknown recycled, stained, or painted wood, or toxic railroad ties. For any wood selection, look for ones marked with “FSC” or Forest Stewardship Council. FSC certification ensures that products come from
