Bandwidth Gauges are simple to set up. As long as you have enabled SNMP communication on your devices, and your devices support MIB-II, you can monitor bandwidth usage with the Bandwidth Gauges tool. The number of gauges is governed by the memory of the Toolset computer. Real time utilization is based on the number of octets transmitted or received through an interface over the last few seconds. Bandwidth gauge polls the remote interface about every fifteen (15) seconds by default and calculates average bits per second since the most recent poll. You can select any interface or sub-interface of a frame relay to monitor. Click . Specify the device IP address or host name. Select to use a community string or SNMPv3 credentials. To test the credentials, click . Click . Specify if you want to store the credentials in the shared credentials database when prompted. Select discovered interfaces or ports, and then click . Check that Adjust automatically-discovered speed is correct, or specify your own speed.Different speeds can be specified for transmit and receive. The tool uses the port speeds to calculate percent utilization of the interface and define the upper scale of the gauge. Select 64-bit or 32-bit traffic counters. Click .The gauge measures a baseline, and then immediately start monitoring usage.

The monitored parameters over time. They will often let you zoom in into a shorter time span where graph resolution is high and can, for instance, display 5-minute average traffic or zoom out to a longer time span–a month or even a year–where it displays daily or weekly averages.Another type of network analysis is called flow analysis. It can give you much more details about the data passing through your network. Flow analysis tools don’t just tell you how much traffic is going by, they give you qualitative information about that traffic. They rely on software that’s built right into your networking devices to send them detailed usage data. Using these tools will provide details such as the top talkers and listeners, the network usage by source or destination address, the network usage by protocol or by application and several other useful information about what is going on.A few flow analysis technologies exist but Cisco’s NetFlow is the most common of them. It is, of course, present on most Cisco devices and it is also present—sometimes under a different name—on equipment from other vendors, such as J-flow on Juniper devices or NetStream on HP and Huawei equipment. There’s even an IETF standard protocol called IPFIX which is based on the latest version of NetFlow. Typical flow analysis tools support several—if not all—flow analysis technologies.IN-DEPTH READ: 6 Best Open-Source NetFlow SoftwareSNMP In A NutshellThe Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is the most widely used network bandwidth analysis technology. SNMP-enabled network devices “publish” a certain number of parameters. Some are configuration parameters that can be modified while others are read-only counters and gauges, used primarily for analysis purposes. There are, for example, CPU and memory usage gauges as well as interface traffic and error counters available via SNMP.For bandwidth analysis, the process is a tad more complex than remotely reading gauges. Two counters called bytes in and bytes out (each interface has them) are read by the monitoring tool at precisely timed intervals. Every 5 minutes is a typical interval. The monitoring tool then subtracts the previous value of the counter from the current one to get the number of bytes transferred in five minutes. It multiplies that number by 8 to get the number of bits in five minutes. Finally, it just divides the last result by 300 (the number of seconds in five minutes) to get the average 5-minute bandwidth in bits per second.RELATED READING: Top 5 Open-Source SNMP Monitoring ToolsExplaining NetFlowOriginally created solely to simplify the creation of router access control lists, Cisco’s engineers quickly realized that NetFlow data could be put to better use by exporting it to a device with the ability analyze that information. This question can only be answered with proper insight into the network performance.NetCrunch gives you an excellent view of your network so you can quickly determine which device should be blamed for the slowdown. What's bandwidth monitoring?Bandwidth monitoring is a method of measuring the actual bandwidth available on the network system. Bandwidth monitoring tools can display real-time data, such as download and upload speeds, and help counter network stress.Depending on the network devices, you can shape the traffic by allocating separate bandwidth for the different traffic types. This requires more than just knowing the overall volume - you also need to know the traffic structure to plan accordingly. Practically checking bandwidth usageEssential bandwidth monitoring starts with monitoring traffic on the switch ports. This method gives you a good overview of volume but little information about the traffic structure. To learn more, you can get an insight into bandwidth analysis with technologies such as NetFlow, jFlow, sFlow, or NBAR, where routers send flow packets showing the traffic structure, which reflects bandwidth usage. Metris systems—not yesterday’s downhole gauges Our permanent downhole gauge technology has evolved from transmit-only devices providing pressure and temperature (PT) measurements at fixed time intervals into interactive systems that enable users to actuate a wide range of downhole completion equipment by using just one electric and two hydraulic lines.Gauges belonging to the family of Metris™ permanent monitoring systems use a single acquisition and diagnostics card that employs frequency division multiple access (FDMA) telemetry—also used by cellular telephones—for bidirectional communication to accommodate dynamic conditions. The card and telemetry combination enables acquisition of PT measurements immunity from any electromagnetic noise (e.g., from an ESP or other AC-powered devices) deployment of more gauges on one monoconductor cable elimination of limitations on distance between gauges selective hydraulic actuation prognostic health monitoring (PHM) of subsurface safety valve actuation gauge, connector, cable, and acquisition system diagnostics.Metris systems are a key component of intelligent completion systems, which maximize flexibility, simplify well design, increase reservoir control using downhole interval control valves, and reduce installation time and complexity.
